Valkyrae Beats Pokimane to Become Most-Watched Female Streamer

Valkyrae, once the fastest-growing streamer in the world, overtakes Pokimane as data shows she was the most-watched female streamer in 2020. Rachel Hofstetter, better known as Valkyrae, relocated from Twitch to YouTube at the start of 2020 and it has proven to be an advantageous move for the streamer. The start of 2021 has been rocky due to OfflineTV Rust server drama, but the streamer most recently received a surprise birthday party while in-game with friends. Overall, Valkyrae appears to not be slowing down, and recent streaming data proves that. Social distancing and quarantining played a part in the blossoming success of the streamer, although most of it is due to Valkyrae's Among Us streams. Among Us was one of the quickest-growing titles in terms of popularity throughout 2020, which helped Valkyrae become the fastest-growing streamer in the world. Since then, she has established herself as a variety streamer, catering to her fans and the wider streaming community by playing what they want to see. Almost a year after her move to YouTube, a report from Stream Hatchet shows that Valkyrae is the most-viewed female streamer with over 23.6 million hours watched total, just beating out Twitch streamer Imane "Pokimane" Anys. What's particularly remarkable is the small margin by which…

Tech giants banished Trump. Now things get complicated

As the world adjusts to a Twitter without @realdonaldtrump, the next big question is: “Now what?" Major tech platforms, long accused of giving President Donald Trump special treatment not allotted to regular users, have shown him the door in the wake of his incitement of violence by supporters at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6. He’s gone from Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat — even Shopify. But in many ways, booting the president was the easy part. Will companies now hold other world leaders to the same standard? Will they wade further into deciding what is and isn't allowed on their platforms, potentially alienating large swaths of their user base? Will all this lead to further online splintering, pushing those flirting with extreme views to fringe sites and secret chat groups? Although they've long sought to remain neutral, Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms are slowly waking up to the active role they and their algorithms have played in shaping a modern world filled with polarized, angry groups and huge factions falling for bogus conspiracies and misinformation about science, politics and medicine. “What we’re seeing is a shift from the platforms from a stance of free-speech absolutism, towards an understanding of speech…
