A Grundy County grand jury indicted a man on two sex offenses on November 4th. Noah Smukler, 23, of Skokie was charged with two counts of traveling to a meet a minor, both class three felonies.The indictment alleges that Smukler knowingly traveled within Illinois for the purpose of engaging in a sexual act with a 15-year-old child after using Snapchat to entice the juvenile for that purpose.The incident occurred somewhere in the Coal City area on July 26th of 2020. The Coal City Police Department arrested Smukler in late September and he remains free on a $25,000 bond.

Last Friday, students gathered around the steps of Coram Library in protest of a Bates College Instagram post published on Oct. 27. The post featured the President of Bates College Republicans along with a short profile, including quotes on their conservative political views. This was part of a bipartisan series highlighting students voting in their first presidential election.  Many students commented on the post, expressing their disagreement and disappointment with Bates for publishing it. After several hundred comments had been written, Bates disabled comments, blocking further comments and hiding previous ones from view. Hundreds of student, as well as some faculty and staff, attended the protest in front of Coram last Friday. (Katherine Merisotis/The Bates Student) A few hours later, Bates posted a statement from President Clayton Spencer on Instagram defending the college’s actions, writing the project aimed to reflect “a range of personal motivations and political viewpoints.” Comments were also disabled on this post.  Numerous students condemned these actions, decrying Bates for limiting discussion and concealing students’ criticism. Bates then re-enabled the comments the following day, which allowed for new comments to be posted and for old comments to be visible. In response to these actions, the Bates College Student Government (BCSG) organized a socially distanced protest. BCSG co-presidents, Perla Figuereo ‘21 and Lebanos Mengistu ‘21, were seen giving hand warmers to the many protestors who had come and braved the cold weather. Members of the Bates community were also able to participate in the protest virtually through Zoom and broadcasted via Instagram live video.  Hundreds of students attended the protest in person, along with some members of the staff and faculty. While many hip-hop fans heard the news about King Von being shot and killed in Atlanta earlier today once news reports surfaced, unfortunately, Lil Durk, found out from his supporters in a shocking way.On Friday (Nov. 6), following the news of King Von's death in Atlanta, a video from an Instagram Live hosted by Lil Durk showed the moment the 28-year-old rapper was seemingly alerted to the shooting of his childhood friend.While Durk was on IG Live entertaining his fans rapping along to Pooh Shiesty's "Back in Blood" featuring Lil Durk, fans began commenting messages like "Von just got shot" and "King Von got shot." In the beginning of the clip, Durkio holds his phone above his head, showing off the men joining him in a moving vehicle. As the video continues, the moment Durk seemingly realizes the message his fans are trying to convey, he immediately ends the live session.Durk and King Von's relationship goes back to their upbringing in Chicago, specifically the O'Block area, where the two were grew up. Those who didn’t see Claremont Heritage’s virtual Home Tour when it was available Oct. 9-11 have another chance to see the tour, which features small houses and accessory dwelling units. The virtual tour is now available to rent at vimeo.com/ondemand/claremont2020hometour. Fee is $30 and the tour will be viewable for 48 hours, according to a news release. The Claremont Heritage Home Tour is normally an in-person, docent-led tour with hundreds of people touring several Claremont houses and learning about the history of the city’s built environment. This year’s tour, the 38th annual event, was virtual because of the coronavirus pandemic. The virtual tour offers an intimate look at seven houses and four accessory dwelling units in a variety of architectural styles and features archival images and interviews with homeowners. The feature, which as of this month can be applied to both one-to-one and group chats, is meant to make chats feel more like face-to-face conversations than imperishable email threads or text messages do, said Zafir Khan, product manager at WhatsApp. Records of most in-person conversations don't exist forever, so conversations on WhatsApp shouldn't have to either, according to Mr. Khan. "Things like text messages had a very different use case over a decade ago -- they were used more for one-off coordination, because of the limited characters and the spottiness of connection," he said. "But now smartphones have proliferated and people always have their phones with them, they're using WhatsApp messaging for very deep and intimate conversations." That led WhatsApp's product team to rethink its assumptions about how the service should work, Mr. Khan said. They hope the new feature will encourage more people to host personal conversations on the platform, confident that their messages won't come back to haunt them, he said. The feature may also help Facebook boost engagement on WhatsApp, according to Miguel Alvarez, global chief technology officer of digital agency AnalogFolk Ltd. He said users may check in on conversations more if they are afraid of missing something important. People in group chats may also be motivated to chime in to keep WhatsApp conversations from going empty, he added. Everyone who lived through the SuperWhoLock fandom block days is taking a long sip of whatever beverage they’re drinking and exhaling a sigh they didn’t know they were holding.
