A passenger in a vehicle died in a car crash while filming a Snapchat video, and now the woman driving is going to jail, according to prosecutors in California. Lindsey Shaver, 21, who pleaded guilty to “gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated,” was given a 90-day jail sentence, the Ventura County District Attorney’s office said in a Feb. 23 news release. “Shaver’s decision to use marijuana and drive while impaired tragically took the life of her best friend,” prosecutor George Brietigam said in the release. At the time of the crash on March 18, 2021, Shaver’s passenger, Laney Zambri, was “filming a Snapchat video while standing through the sunroof” on Pacific Coast Highway in Ventura, prosecutors said. Shaver lost control, and the car flipped, the district attorney’s office said. Zambri was critically injured and died days later. Zambri was 17 years old when she died and was three months away from graduating high school, according to a foundation created in her memory. “Laney was a kind, empathetic person who always had a big, beautiful smile,” the Laney Zambri Foundation’s website says. “She was looking forward to a new chapter in her life, college.” She hoped to one day be a nurse

Photo Credit: MrJayW via Pixabay A 33-year-old Chicago man who bullied a 16-year-old Massachusetts girl into sending him nude photos and then threatened to release them to her friends and family if she didn't give him more will spend more than a decade behind bars, federal authorities said. Ernesto Herrera, who pleaded guilty to one count of coercion and enticement of a minor in August, was sentenced to 12 years in federal prison on Friday, Fed. 24, the US Attorney for Massachusetts said.  Herrera reached out to the victim from an anonymous phone number through a social media app in June 2020 and manipulated her into giving him nude photos and videos of her performing sex acts, the prosecutor said. He did this for months, and if the girl tried to resist, Herrera would threaten to release the pictures and videos online, authorities said. He even asked her to send him videos of her performing sex acts on her dog, federal authorities

Technology Several Snapchat users have claimed their accounts have been “permanently locked” and the app has responded that the team is “unable” to fix them. The app appears to be troubled by more than one technical issue in 2023 as some users had expressed their frustration about not being able to log out only two weeks ago. The product allows users to add licensed song clips, excerpts from TV and movies, and their own original audio to their Snaps and Stories. The first feature allows users to find relevant sounds to complement a Lens, by tapping on the Sounds icon when applying a Lens to a photo or video. The feature is rolling out globally on iOS and Android. The second feature enables users to create montage videos that are automatically in rhythm to the beat of audio tracks from the Sounds library. The US Supreme Court struggled to determine when social media companies can be held responsible for aiding terrorism as the justices heard the second of two cases that are poised to shape the legal rules governing harmful online material.In a clash stemming from a 2017 shooting in an Istanbul nightclub, the justices spent more than two hours probing the boundaries of a federal anti-terrorism law – and trying to decide whether social media platforms are akin to banks and restaurants that serve terrorists and people who give guns to known criminals. The justices didn't give a clear indication as to the outcome, though some suggested they were skeptical of efforts by the family of a victim to sue Twitter Inc. and other social media companies for allegedly not doing enough to take down terrorist content.
