Ms. Marvel Premiere Review: The MCU Seen through a Snapchat Filter – MovieWeb

The Marvel Cinematic Universe hits a Gen Z bullseye with a superhero tailor-made for teenage social media stardom. Ms. Marvel can best be described as the MCU through a Snapchat filter. Our sixteen-year-old, Pakistani-American heroine daydreams about cosplay conventions and cute boys; while dealing with restrictive parents and adhering to her Islamic faith. Ms. Marvel breaks new ground with its culturally diverse and practical depiction of female adolescence. We've certainly never seen a superhero praying in a mosque or talking about her period. The problem is that the first two episodes feel lifeless despite the barrage of bells and whistles. The textbook narrative could have been written by a bot with a checklist. Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, a Jersey City teen obsessed with Captain Marvel. She doodles comics to escape the drag of daily high school life. Her father, Yusuf (Mohan Kapur), tries to be cool and understanding; but her mother, Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff), has zero tolerance for frivolity or disobedience. Kamala desperately wants to attend the first Avengers Con. Her nerdy best friend, Bruno (Matt Lintz), has crafted an awesome Captain Marvel costume. Muneeba will only let Kamala go to the Avengers Con with her dad as…

TikTok launches custom avatars to rival Snapchat's Bitmoji and Apple's Memoji – The Verge

TikTok is launching a new feature that lets users turn themselves into custom animated avatars in the style of Apple’s Memoji, Snapchat’s Bitmoji, and Meta’s Avatars. The feature is rolling out globally today and is accessible from the app’s camera alongside TikTok’s various other effects. To use the feature on yourself, open the app, flip the camera to selfie mode, tap effects, and select the avatar effect. You can then either use a preset look or hit “new” to create a custom avatar. This lets you customize your avatar’s face shape, skin tone, hairstyle, and accessories, including makeup and piercings. You can then record a video with the avatar following your movements and facial expressions. The new avatar feature is accessible from the video effects select. It’s in the far right of the top row, highlighted in red. TikTok says it wants to make the feature as inclusive as possible and will continue to “improve and innovate to make sure the experience is truly representative of all who are on TikTok.” News of the feature first leaked earlier this year. It’s interesting that so many social media platforms have now embraced custom avatars as a way for people to communicate…

Unfortunately, her hesitations turned out to be completely justified, and the man blocked her on social media platforms mere seconds after getting his hands on her money.
