When police arrested Alex Prosser they found more than 1,200 films and pictures on his phone showing babies and children being sexually abused. The Danbury Police Department has also been training their detectives to use the short-form video social media app to aid in their investigations.The department has been getting their detectives up to speed on TikTok and Snapchat, two popular social media apps commonly used by younger generations, through investigation training webinars. In an increasingly virtual world, the ability to engage with these platforms— from Facebook’s older generations to TikTok teens— is recognized by the department as a great investigative tool, and one that can help them connect with the community. And while social media trainings have been ongoing since 2014, the department is getting an update on some specific platforms. At the start of January, Danbury detectives completed a specialized “TikTok/Snapchat investigations” training, and had another, now-canceled training on the same topic scheduled for Feb. 7.
