WASHINGTON (AP) — Bearing down on hugely popular social media platforms and their impact on children, the leaders of a Senate panel have called executives from YouTube, TikTok and Snapchat to face questions on what their companies are doing to ensure young users’ safety.The Senate Commerce subcommittee on consumer protection is fresh off a highly charged hearing with a former Facebook data scientist, who laid out internal company research showing that the company's Instagram photo-sharing service appears to seriously harm some teens. The panel is widening its focus to examine other tech platforms, with millions or billions of users, that also compete for young people’s attention and loyalty. The three executives — Michael Beckerman, a TikTok vice president and head of public policy for the Americas; Leslie Miller, vice president for government affairs and public policy of YouTube’s owner Google; and Jennifer Stout, vice president for global public policy of Snapchat parent Snap Inc. — are due to appear at a subcommittee hearing Tuesday. ELKTON, Ky. (WBKO) - The The Todd County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement on their Facebook page October 25 concerning a Snapchat post that circulated through the Todd County community over the weekend.(Story continues after post)In the statement, the sheriff’s office said that Elkton Police have been made aware of the post allegedly threatening students and administration at Central High School, and that the post was sent by someone with the display name “Alex Anderson.”The post also has been circulating through different communities across the county as well, according to the post.“While the threat at this time cannot be substantiated, the Elkton Police Department along with the Todd County Sheriff’s Office will be increasing police presence at Todd County Central High School as well as Todd County Middle School. According to the sheriff, the Snapchat made a reference to a student planning to shoot up Monteleone Junior High.The STPSO School Resource Officer identified the student who made the threats and determined that the student had not shown up for school on Friday, according to the sheriff's office. Deputies found the 13-year-old at his residence where the sheriff said he confessed to making the social media threats. Oct. 11—Rumors on a social media site took on a life of its own and led to a police investigation into the person responsible for creating the online post that further spread angst among high school students.Tyler Lynn Loden, 19, 122 Broken Arrow Dr., Lake Tansi, was later arrested and charged with misdemeanor harassment and will appear in General Sessions Court to answer to the charge.On Oct. 1, Crossville Police Det. Jon Tollett responded to Cumberland County High School on a harassment report centering around a student being accused of making threats of violence at the school.During the resulting investigation and interviews with several students, it was determined that a Snapchat group titled, "How to kill a school shooter," was created and directed toward a student.Problem was, the student did not make the statements he was accused of making, and a police investigation labeled them unfounded.
