Ralph Lauren Going Virtual for the Holidays

Ralph Lauren has teamed with Snapchat to launch a virtual experience for holiday. Ralph Lauren is embracing the digital world for the holidays this year using a series of creative efforts — from Snapchat to virtual stores — to invite customers to experience its world. The anchor piece of the project is the creation of a virtual store that will allow customers to visit four of the company’s brick-and-mortar shops in New York, Beverly Hills, Paris and Hong Kong. The virtual store will sell current-season merchandise as well as vintage pieces. The idea of a virtual store was tested in Beverly Hills this fall and was deemed a success, with virtual “foot traffic” 10 times higher than the number of people who would have visited the physical store, the company said. As a result, the company rushed to get the other stores ready for the holidays. David Lauren, vice chairman and chief innovation officer, said the company had been working on the idea of creating a virtual store for some time now, but the pandemic accelerated its plan. “Customers want to know what’s trending around the world,” he said. “What’s ‘the’ shoe in Paris or which celebrity in Los Angeles is wearing that dress?” Before COVID-19, Ralph Lauren shoppers used to travel globally and stop into stores in the cities they visited. But with even local travel impacted by the current health crisis, the company took the opportunity to replicate its stores online and allow customers to visit safely in that way. “Now you can go to Paris for your holiday shopping,” Lauren said. “You can’t go to the London store right now and you might not want to drive into New York to shop, but you don’t need to in the modern world — a COVID-19 world. You can…

A Singaporean visual artist swims through dimensions following TikTok success

After years of hustling as a video editor, augmented reality artist Aundraj Jude found fame on TikTok making surreal videos of Singapore that later earned him a stint at Snapchat.  The 29-year-old was the only person from Asia out of a group of nine people picked for a six-week residency that began three weeks ago to work on an interactive augmented reality Snapchat filter. The gig came true for Aundraj after spending months during the partial “circuit breaker” lockdown learning 3D animation and producing videos to millions of viewers on TikTok, one of which even fooled people into believing that Singapore had actually deployed animated sharks to become social distancing officers at train stations.  “They saw my work and I guess they liked it and loved the AR aspect specifically,” Aundraj said during a recent interview with Coconuts about getting noticed by Snapchat. “t’s always been a goal to work with a global brand like Snapchat. So when the opportunity presented itself, I knew I had to apply but I had no idea I’d even be able to get it.” For his Snapchat project, Aundraj and his team are designing a filter that makes fish appear to jump off the ground when users point at them with their phones.  “It’s honestly been an amazing experience to be surrounded by a community as huge as Snapchat, working with people who’ve been working with AR and 3D for many years, the amount of knowledge I’ve received is truly something I’m grateful for,” he said.  The video editor juggles his time with the gig and his work at the Epitome Collective local production house, where he has worked on projects for brands like Singapore Airlines and Fanta.   @assthrowknotPSA 🦈: Please maintain social distancing 🇸🇬. #fyp #covid_19 #socialdistancing #psa #publicserviceannouncement #shark #motiontracking #3d♬ original…

Facebook introduces 'Vanish Mode', meant to take away advantage held by Snapchat

Facebook announced ‘Vanish Mode’—which lets you send messages on Messenger and Instagram that disappear automatically, similar to Snapchat. According to Facebook, the feature is for “something you want to say in the moment without worrying about it sticking around”. To turn it on, swipe up on your mobile device in an existing chat thread. Swipe up again and you’re back to your regular chat. However, Vanish Mode only works for one-on-one chats, not group messages. “You can send memes, GIFs, stickers or reactions to share what you really think when you can’t find the words, or just be silly with your friends without it staying in your chat history,” wrote Bridget Pujals, Messenger Product Manager and Manik Singh, Instagram Product Manager. You can only use Vanish Mode with people who you are connected to. It is also an opt-in feature—so you can choose whether or not to enter vanish mode with someone. You’ll also be notified if someone takes a screenshot of the chat, and you’re able to block someone and report a conversation if you feel unsafe. While it might seem like you can use the feature to have a secure conversation, it really isn’t for that. Facebook already offers a fully end-to-end encrypted feature called Secret Conversations. Vanish Mode is meant to just take away another advantage held by Snapchat. Previously, the company already copied the Stories format first made popular by Snapchat. Now that product alone on each of its platforms is used by more people (500+ million) compared to Snapchat in its entirety (249 million). Vanish Mode on Messenger is already available in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Peru and Bangladesh. It will also first show up on Instagram for Canada, Argentina, Chile, Peru and a few other countries. It will soon show up in Malaysia and other parts of the world…

The Power Of Social Media During a Pandemic

The Power Of Social Media During a Pandemic, By Elizabeth McMullen The power of social media through a pandemic. Elizabeth McMullen Most people nowadays have a variety of social media apps and profiles installed on their devices. Although they may seem insignificant, now especially, they have acted as a unifier for communities, especially through Lockdown…  From Snapchat to Instagram, selfies to hashtags, these seemingly mundane practices of waking up, checking our phones and scrolling through social media unconsciously connects us to loved ones, celebrities, and even people in the same situations as you. You can enjoy and share your creations with the world and explore what others have been getting up to. Through the pandemic, people have been able to rely on social media to update them on topics such as news and sources of information. Although, the spread of fake news towards the virus itself did increase when cases began to rise in England, and even theorists across the country began prescribing home remedies, preventions, treatments and suggestions as to why COVID-19 happened – some even saying that it was caused by 5G. All those theories, of course are fake news, and have since been debunked by various scientists. Therefore, we must turn to more reliable sources for information, such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the NHS. Furthermore, the apparent discovery of a COVID-19 vaccine has the world divided, some protestors going to the lengths of spreading Anti-vaccination rumours through these social media platforms and fuelling uproar in the public. On the other hand, many are overjoyed with the creation of the vaccine – looking toward returning to what we knew as normality.

NASCAR suspends Josh Reaume indefinitely for Snapchat post of Toaster Strudel

NASCAR driver Josh Reaume has been suspended indefinitely from the sport after posting a photo of a Toaster Strudel pastry on Snapchat. Fans and critics said a drawing made of icing on the pastry appeared to be in the shape of a swastika. The swastika, an anti-Semitic symbol, was used as a centerpiece in the 1920 Nazi flag designed by Adolf Hitler. Reaume, 30, has said multiple times that he did not intend to depict the symbol on his pastry. “I was mindlessly putting icing on a Toaster Strudel, thinking about how I was going to arrange to get my daughter to day care in the morning because that’s my responsibility, and I was flying out to Phoenix the next day,” Reaume said, according to Yahoo Sports. “When I was done, I took a picture. I wrote, ‘Snack time,’ and posted it to my Snapchat, which I had no idea it was even more than my immediate friend group," he said. “There was not a bone in my body that had an intent of doing that." NASCAR officials announced Tuesday that Reaume was suspended for an unspecified amount of time. The organization said he violated a rule in the NASCAR Rule Book that prohibits “public statement and/or communication that criticizes, ridicules, or otherwise disparages another person based upon that person’s race, color, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, religion, age or handicapping condition.” Reaume issued an apology via Twitter this week insisting the symbol was drawn unintentionally and offering condolences for those who were affected by the Holocaust. He later deleted his account after receiving continued criticism. In an interview, he said he has no plans to use social media in the immediate future. He will have to complete sensitivity training before he can compete again. © 2020…

Murder suspect posted on Snapchat in victim's car, clothes

A murder suspect allegedly posted on Snapchat after the stabbing while he drove to Texas in the victim’s car, wearing the victim’s clothes, according to Las Vegas police arrest documents. Nile Herrington, 23, was arrested Nov. 2 north of Austin, Texas and is awaiting extradition to Las Vegas to face charges of open murder, robbery with use of a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle, residential burglary and theft, according to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department. Herrington is accused of stabbing 34-year-old Anthony King inside an apartment at City View Apartments, 3355 Arville St., on Oct. 25, according to a Metropolitan Police Department arrest report. Detectives spoke to friends of King who gave officers photos from Herrington’s Snapchat, where he had reportedly posted multiple times wearing King’s unique jewelry, driving King’s car and hanging out in Texas, the arrest report said. King owned multiple short-term rentals in Las Vegas and hired Herrington to clean them, police said. Investigators believe Herrington stabbed King with a steak knife found at the scene, took King’s 2019 Lexus and robbed the victim’s residence at Veer Towers on Las Vegas Boulevard South before driving to Texas. “Nile posted a video showing several items of designer clothing items on the bed which were identified by friends to belong to King,” according to the report. “The video appears to have been taken from inside King‘s room at the Veer Tower and the clothing items are estimated to have cost more than ten thousand dollars.” Herrington also posted on his social media about a “life changing experience he had in Vegas,” police said. He had not yet been extradited as of Friday evening, according to jail records. Contact Sabrina Schnur at sschnur@reviewjournal.com or 702-383-0278. Follow @sabrina_schnur on Twitter.
