Marathon runners hoping to improve their running times may need to avoid participating in races that take place on one particular spring day each year. A new University of Georgia research paper co-authored by Patrick O’Connor, professor in the Mary Frances Early College of Education’s Department of Kinesiology, details the effects on marathon run performance when taking place on daylight saving time transition days. Patrick O’ Connor The paper, “Marathon run performance on daylight savings time transition days: results from a natural experiment,” was published in the journal “Chronobiology International” in September 2021. O’Connor co-authored the paper with Mihaela Kancheva, a college alumna and current medical student at the University of Central Florida. “Because shifting clocks by even one hour in the spring and fall temporarily disrupts sleep and mood, we wondered if human performance also would be disrupted,” O’Connor said. O’Connor and Kancheva obtained average run times for all finishers in marathon runs on the spring and fall daylight saving time transition days from a database for the years 2000-2018. A meet and greet reception at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Fond du Lac campus will provide an opportunity to connect with a UWO alumnus and lecturer—an inspiring artist who exhibits his work nationally. Michael Wartgow ’94 will be on site from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 11 at the Oberreich Gallery located in the University Center Commons. Wartgow’s mixed media works recall landscapes, structures or spaces that encourage entry and explore various structural and behavioral barriers that impede abilities to understand history. “Currently, I see a climate where history is often perceived as having little relevance due in part to the immediate accessibility of information through various technological platforms. I’m interested in how this immediacy of information coincides with history and how it affects our personal experiences with it.” At UW Oshkosh Since 2015, Wartgow has been collaborating with the Women’s Center and Counseling Center at UW Oshkosh on an annual exhibit titled, Never Silent, which coincides with Take Back the Night and is featured at the Gail F. From tumblr to TikTok, MARINA's 'Electra Heart' has curiously stood the test of time. Marina and the Diamonds’ 2012 ‘tumblr-core’ album Electra Heart is eliciting a new wave of fascination and popularity amongst TikTok users (mostly children too young to have properly experienced it the first time around). Album track ‘Teen Idle’ went Gold last month, a full ten years after its release — as did Electra Heart opener (and another non-single) ‘Bubblegum Bitch‘ back in March 2021 — and it’s all thanks to those trusty, tastemaking TikTok teens, reposting MARINA (as she’s now known) classics and falling in love with a ten-year-old album as though it was brand new. The record was the first truly radio-friendly offering from MARINA — working with the likes of Diplo, Benny Blanco, and disgraced producer Dr Luke, Electra Heart embraces jagged synths, overwhelming four-on-the-floor beats and some truly impressive topline work from the vocalist. When Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael and Jason Mantzoukas started their podcast, How Did This Get Made? — in which they dissect a different bad movie each episode — in December 2010, “explaining what a podcast was was difficult,” says Scheer. “Now, trying to find someone who doesn’t have a podcast is as difficult.” In 11 years, the three friends have broken down nearly 300 stinkers, from Burlesque and Grease 2 to Face/Off and The Room.
