The elegant Shipton Spire, in summer. Photo: Marcin Tomaszewski/Facebook While the Polish National Team still considers whether or not to attempt Winter K2, at least one top expedition from Poland will in the Karakorum this winter. Marcin Tomaszewski, Damian Bielecki, and Pawel Haldas have set their sights on the stunning 5,852m Shipton Spire. Starting in December, they will try to open a new route on its frozen granite slabs. Damian Bielecki (left) and Pawel Haldas on the North Face of the Eiger last winter. Photo: Pawel Haldas Marcin Tomaszewski is a big wall-climber with an impressive international resumé. His two partners are also well-seasoned winter climbers, with wide experience in the Tatras Mountains and the Alps. For Bielecki and Haldas, Shipton Spire will be a logical next step after climbing the North Face of the Eiger last winter. Tomaszewski himself climbed that classic wall in winter 2016 with the late Tom Ballard, opening a new route that they called ‘Titanic’. Tomaszewski has never been to the Karakorum in winter before. But he and Marek Raganowicz opened a new route, the remarkable ‘Bushido’, on the Great Trango Tower in 2013. The 46-pitch route (VII- A4+, UIAA grade: VII+) is considered one…

And as you might have already guessed, the internet sure did have a lot of feelings about the photo — ranging from enthusiastic to angry to *checks notes* thirsty. So, we took to Twitter and Tumblr to round up just a few of the funniest reactions, and we curated them into this easy-to-enjoy list for your viewing pleasure! Ready? Here we go:

Timothée Chalamet gave us the first look at Wonka, a prequel to the Roald Dahl novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that’s centered on a younger version of the eccentric candy factory owner. There was some excitement and annoyance at the nature of an unnecessary prequel, but it also provided proper fuel for a variety of memes poking fun at the look. The photo of Chalamet looks as though it walked straight out of a Victorian novel. There are hints of both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp’s previous iterations of the character. Chalamet’s coat is a similar color to Depp’s Wonka while his hat is closer to Wilder’s Wonka (his hat also appears to be made out of chocolate). The coat is detailed with embroidery, and instead of a giant bow tie, Chalamet’s Wonka opted for a scarf. Instead of purely getting fans—particularly the millions of people who follow Chalamet on social media—excited about a new movie that won’t be released until 2023, it largely prompted jokes about how Wonka was sexy now thanks to Chalamet’s casting. And to bring back an old internet favorite, the Once-Ler even got name-checked as several people predicted a resurgence for the Tumblr meme.…

Photographed by Savanna RuedyI remember a Tumblr post that changed my view of vaginas forever, as Tumblr posts are wont to do when you’re 16 years old and on the family computer late at night. The user was analysing the semantics of how we talk about sex. Why, they wanted to know, is sex always considered to be a penis penetrating a vagina? Why are penises always dominant but vaginas always submissive? What if we flip the narrative? What if the vagina envelops or engulfs the phallus? What if the penis is the submissive one of the pair? This heteronormative example can be easily applied to queer relationships, too. The one who receives is the 'bottom', the one who gives is the 'top'. The language lends itself to the stereotypes that the former is the submissive and the latter is the dominant. Indeed, the labels 'top' and 'bottom' are often used interchangeably with the labels 'dom' and 'sub' – but is this always true? And is it a fair assumption? In 2018 an Autostraddle survey discovered that 47.4% of lesbian bottoms prefer not to be actively 'in control' during intercourse and only 41% of bottoms identified themselves as kinky. Nate, a trans man…

On Tumblr, Lorde, old poetry and the Mongrel Mob, columnist Glenn McConnell reflects on a divided nation.OPINION: Very few people can be labelled either good or evil. The 2010s saw an old poem by Walt Whitman take off on social media. The website Tumblr, urged by alt stars like Lana Del Rey, fell in love with the old essayist and journalist who died in 1892. He was a white American, who the history books say enjoyed sunbathing naked. His work, Song of Myself, was repeated to no end, especially the line “Very well then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes.”123RFWalt Whitman, 1819-1892, was an American poet, essayist, and journalist. To me, that phrase spoke to intellectual curiosity and an acceptance that, well, nothing’s perfect. No one political ideology is watertight and even our best-held beliefs should be malleable. It acknowledges that our views can often contradict themselves, therefore we should be open to hearing the thoughts and experiences of others.
