June 11, 2021 | 5:18pm | Updated June 11, 2021 | 5:23pm Doggone it — the now iconic picture of a smirking Shiba Inu just became the most expensive meme to sell as a non-fungible token, or NFT. The dog meme known as “doge” was sold in an auction Friday for approximately $4 million to an unidentified buyer with the Twitter handle @PleasrDAO. The bidder, in an apparent gag, paid for the meme via cryptocurrency Ether — handing over 1,696.9 of the cyber coins. The money goes to Japanese kindergarten teacher Atsuko Sato, the owner of the actual Shiba Inu dog pictured in the meme. Her sale of the “doge” meme took place on digital auction website Zora, where it sold in just three days. The meme has been popular on internet forums like Reddit and Tumblr since early 2010, but reached new highs as the face of cryptocurrency Dogecoin. The digital coin was started as a joke but has gained steam recently as billionaires Mark Cuban and Elon Musk embrace the currency. Cuban mandated his sports team, The Dallas Mavericks, accept Dogecoin as payment, and Musk has hyped it on Twitter, including by posting a picture of the dog…

A former Carmel Clay Schools bus driver was arrested June 1 and charged with child exploitation and possession of child pornography. Police arrested Terrence Richards, 40, on June 1 after an 11-month investigation by the Hamilton County Metro Child Exploitation Task Force. Richards worked as a bus driver for CCS for two years before resigning on Jan. 21 after police alerted CCS officials of the investigation. Emily Bauer, CCS director of community relations, said Richards has not been on school property or performed any duties for the district since school officials became aware of the investigation. She said police confirmed that no CCS students were involved in the case. The investigation began with a CyberTipline Report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to the task force. The social media site Tumblr had informed the agency that a user had uploaded 12 images of child pornography, mostly of prepubescent girls in either compromised positions or performing sexual acts. Information about the user, including an email address, username and IP address, was sent to Hamilton County detectives. Search warrants led to emails connecting Richards to the Tumblr account. By Shereen Siewert A Wausau man will spend three years in prison after an investigation prompted by a cyber tip from a popular social media platform regarding sexually explicit photos and videos of children that were uploaded to their servers. Brian Shepler, 33, was convicted Monday in Marathon County Circuit Court of two counts of possessing child pornography. As part of a plea agreement, eight additional charges were dismissed. Police say Shepler uploaded dozens of photos and videos to his Tumblr blog, many of which contained images of prepubescent girls being sexually assaulted by adult men. Tumblr terminated Shepler’s account and turned the files over to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in August 2018. Discord, the popular community chatting platform, may soon be seeing a massive deal. The big tech company Microsoft is reportedly in talks to purchase the platform for $10 billion. Details of the conversation are still scarce but this Microsoft Discord acquisition would become part of Microsoft’s ever-expanding reach. Motivation to PurchaseDiscord got its start in 2015, and since then, it’s become wildly popular for communities and friends. Discord is a chatting, video calling and livestreaming platform for gaming. However, people use the servers for countless other interests like music and movies, too. As a user, you get texting, calling and livestreaming for free, but you can also upgrade to the Nitro plan for even more features for chatting. It’s clear that such a connected platform has seen drastic growth during the pandemic when people must stay apart. Through this community-centric approach, Discord has drawn in over 100 million active monthly users across 6.7 million active servers. Thus, this success put Discord in the spotlight, with Microsoft now moving in as a potential buyer. If the two companies reach a deal, it would likely come out to $10 billion after Discord reached a valuation of $7 billion at the end of 2020. Its drastic growth…

Apologies in advance for eliciting an image that is best relegated to a collective amnesia, but who remembers the map of Tumblr? A crude drawing of a series of connecting islands, its borders are largely designated by fandom or cultural affiliation. Regions labeled in Comic Sans vary wildly from “Cats” and “Nutella” to Harry Potter and Doctor Who, with only a small sliver of “Fandom Island” relegated to “Other.” When recently asked by a former fandom blogger which territory I had occupied in this fictional landscape, I winced. “I, uh, actually ran a gore blog, so I guess ‘Other,’” I admitted to the woman who had once undoubtedly found herself marooned on the coast of “Shipper Lake.” Long before Tumblr went through a mass purification, the blogging platform was an effective outlet for teens to examine the seedy underbelly of culture with a guise of relative anonymity. Hardcore porn, violent imagery and grisly details from cold cases were reblogged on a continuous cycle, with fringe bloggers often scouring the internet for shocking images to proliferate the stream of content. When resources seemed to be exhausted where real-life crime and autopsy photos were concerned, it became a morbid pastime to scour…
