There's being a fan of something and there's being in its fandom. Being in the fandom of any particular property means a person identifies with their love for that thing and seeks out a community of others who love what they love. Fandom is engaging with fanfiction, coming up with headcanons, and fancasting characters for adaptations that might never exist. Fandom's homeland is Tumblr.  Tumblr blogs are a social media Swiss army knife that allow users to post text, images, video, links, and gifs individually or combined in posts that at this point have covered the entirety of the human experience and then some. That versatility, combined with the ability to tag posts for searching, lends itself to fostering online fandom in all of its multimedia glory. Tag searching the top posts about Leigh Bardugo's book Shadow and Bone a year ago would have pulled up thousands of entries ranging from roleplaying blogs to detailed fanart, but searching it today pulls up thousands more about Shadow and Bone — the Netflix series.  Shadow and Bone and Bardugo's associated Grishaverse series of books have been Tumblr mainstays for years, and when it comes to TV or film adaptations of fan favorite…

Popular Tumblr-inspired social media platform Pillowfort was back online on Thursday after a three-month shutdown over potential security concerns. The site, which is available to pre-registered users as of Thursday afternoon, is an NSFW-friendly microblogging website where users can post images, text, and video posts to their followers. Users can also join communities for different subject matters, from pornographic artwork to Animal Crossing. “Pillowfort aims to be a sort of hybrid of your favorite blogging websites—keeping the strengths of these platforms while compensating for their shortcomings,” the site’s homepage reads. Pillowfort first garnered interest as a Kickstarter project in 2018. After Tumblr banned NSFW content later that year, Pillowfort became an attractive alternative for adult artists, fandom communities, and LGBTQ members. Initially, Pillowfort launched public registrations on Jan. 25, sparking widespread interest on Twitter. However, users quickly found a series of HTML exploits that “could potentially allow cross-site scripting” attacks, one security expert told Motherboard. Pillowfort closed user access shortly after and began a three-month process to fix the site’s vulnerabilities. “Since then our developers, with the assistance of an experienced security consultant, reviewed & revised the entire platform to have a more holistic approach to site security,” a post…

Verizon is seeking a buyer for its digital media unit, including Yahoo and AOL, per WSJ. Among those kicking tires is Apollo Global Management.Why it matters: It's the highest-profile case of a tech company wanting to become a media content company, and then bolting once it fully grasps the economics of being a media content company.Pricing: Verizon paid a combined $9 billion to buy Yahoo and AOL, but WSJ suggests the asking price is only between $4 billion and $5 billion. It previously divested of both HuffingtonPost (to Buzzfeed) and Tumblr (to Automattic), but for nominal amounts.Caveat: It's unclear if Verizon is willing to part with Yahoo's subscription business, centered around products like Yahoo Fantasy and Yahoo Finance, which has around 3 million paying customers.Reminder: AOL still offers a dial-up internet service. The bottom line: The only surprise is that it took this long. Verizon CEO Hans Vestberg came aboard after the Yahoo purchase, and was pretty clear that he wanted the company's future to be networking, not media.

PITTSBURGH - A former resident of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced in federal court to 120 months’ imprisonment and lifetime supervised release on his conviction of possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, Acting United States Attorney Stephen R. Kaufman announced today. United States District Judge Cathy Bisson imposed the sentence on Krent Jeffrey Haight, age 48, formerly of the City’s Mount Washington neighborhood. According to information presented to the court, Haight, on November 14, 2018, unlawfully possessed approximately 1500 still images and videos in computer graphics files depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, some of whom were under the age of 12 years. The images and videos were found on electronic devices seized by federal agents during the execution of a search warrant at Haight’s residence. During the search, Haight admitted to the agents that he uploaded numerous sexually exploitive images to Tumblr, a social networking website, making them available for public viewing. Haight had two prior convictions for sex offenses, the most recent of which involved the possession of child pornography. He was a registered sex offender in the State of Pennsylvania. Prior to imposing sentence, Judge Bissoon stated that she believed a 10-year term…
