Following Ghosts Up the Wall: Two Gen Z Climbers Chase a Legendary Andes Route

Icicles, a main feature on the west face of Cayesh, Cordillera Blanca. Photo: Dane Steadman As a teenager, Dane Steadman saw a video on YouTube that he never forgot. It showed a wild climb that combined vertical rock, strange snow features, and precarious icicles, done by two guys he had never heard of named Steve House and Marko Prezelj. He had never heard of the peak, either: the west face of Cayesh in the Peruvian Andes. Today, Steadman is in his twenties and a recent Piolet d’Or recipient. Prezelj and House are in their late fifties. Those old enough to have followed Prezelj and House’s careers started reading about them in magazines, bought their books, and studied their online reports in the early years of the internet. Contemporaries of Dane Steadman sometimes found inspiration for their first vertical steps from this pair. The climbers’ camp at the base of Cayesh’s west face. Photo: Dane Steadman Twenty years later Steadman is currently in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. Last week, he suggested to his climbing partner and fellow Piolet d’Or winner Cody Winckler that they venture up a valley called the Quebrada Quilcayhuanca to give that same west face of Cayesh a try.

A Good Summer for Exploratory Alpinism in Pakistan – Explorersweb »

This summer, climbing in Pakistan is more focused on alpinists attempting new routes on lesser peaks than on the 8,000’ers. Two Japanese have joined the Italians on K7, and a strong Czech team approaches its preliminary goal. Storm foils Italians at 6,000m Matteo della Bordella, Mirco Grasso, Luca Ducoli, and Giacomo Mauri climbed up to 6,000m on a completely new route on the southeast face of K7, before a storm pushed them back to Base Camp. Della Bordella described the mixed terrain as completely vertical. “It’s a huge dream, but we feel we’re touching it with our fingertips,” he wrote. The climbers are using capsule style — a style in Himalayan climbing where climbers rappel down to portaledges at the end of the day, then jumar up fixed ropes the following morning to where they left off. Della Bordella told Lo Scarpone CAI (the news bulletin by the Italian Alpine Club) that they need at least four days of good weather to summit. They planned to remain in Pakistan until July 6, but might be able to extend their stay for another week. Lost Harpo Marx Recording From 1964 Debuts on Billboard Classical Charts

The legendary late comic's set with the Riverside Symphony arrives on two tallies. Harpo Marx Frank Bez/Courtesy Thirty Tigers More than six decades after his passing, legendary comedian-musician Harpo Marx has a new entry on Billboard’s charts. Harpo Speaks!: The Riverside Symphony Concert featuring Peter and the Wolf by Riverside Symphony and Marx debuts at No. 6 on Billboard’s Traditional Classical Albums chart (dated June 20) and No. 25 on Classical Albums. Related The set, on Ramseur Records/Thirty Tigers, was recorded March 20, 1964, serving as a souvenir of a benefit concert held by the orchestra to raise funds for its Southern California nonprofit, featuring Marx narrating the children’s tale Peter and the Wolf . Marx was the so-called silent member of the Marx Brothers comedy team — brothers Chico, Harpo, Groucho, Gummo and Zeppo (with Zeppo eventually leaving) — and was known for his impeccable comedic timing on stage and screen. He taught himself to play the harp and trained under classical harpist Mildred Dilling. Notably, the performance on that date marked the first documented time in half a century that Marx spoke publicly. At the time, he had been in semi-retirement due to multiple heart attacks. Unfortunately, it

‘Girls Like Girls’ Review: Hayley Kiyoko Brings Tumblr to Theaters – IndieWire

Hayley Kiyoko‘s “Girls Like Girls” arrives in theaters this weekend carrying an unusually heavy burden. The directorial debut of a beloved queer artist affectionately known as Lesbian Jesus (yes, that’s really what Kiyoko’s fans like to call her) would be enough to generate serious buzz on its own. But the 35-year-old singer-songwriter’s first major movie is also based on her landmark music video from 2015, a legendary text for a certain generation of very online queer women. Hovering around 163 million views on YouTube today, the original “Girls Like Girls” music video is a viral Tumblr-era phenomenon that helped shape sapphic culture in the digital age. Kiyoko’s sun-soaked fairytale — about two teen girls falling in love against a tumultuous backdrop of suburban longing and hidden desire — even inspired the pop icon to write a best-selling YA novel about its characters in 2023. Translating that text to the big screen seemed like an obvious next step for Kiyoko. And, at a time when studios are frantically searching for creative ways to compel internet audiences toward real-world experiences, it’s also a savvy business move from distributor Focus Features. The need for a feel-good queer movie is palpable this summer, too;
