The Beat’s fearless leader, Heidi McDonald, approached me with the idea of a column about fandom issues and, for lack of a better word, drama. Fandom can be a very volatile space, with tastes changing from week to week, day to day…and even minute to minute. I jumped at the chance to explore fandom controversies every week or so. I feel it’s best to start this column with a little exploration of my own journeys through fandom. I am a proud member of quite a lot of fandoms, although I would only consider myself active in a very few. By active, I mean that I actively create content, whether it be .gifs or photosets or fanfiction; I, sadly, cannot draw, so I rely on the talents of my fellow fanartists). The idea for this column, in particular, came about when Tumblr released its top 100 fandoms, ships, and characters for the year, which were honestly kind of baffling to me. Everybody’s favourite Tumblr girl circa 2012 is no stranger to internet drama, but this time it involved an unsurprising opponent in the form of Nicki Minaj. Acacia Brinley rose to fame back when Tumblr was a big deal, but she soon converted to a YouTuber. Now, she’s a married Influencer with three children. Astonishingly, the outcome of the love triangle was up in the air right up until the end. Show creator Kevin Williamson almost had Joey end up with Dawson — and maintains that he is Team Dawson to this day. With all due respect to Kevin Williamson, he is absolutely wrong. Team Pacey was the only option that would have ever made sense or been satisfying. The above gif just about sums it up — and the footage was shot before the love triangle was even dreamed of!Dawson, at every turn, chose himself, prioritized his own feelings, and was the epitome of a whiny, selfish, toxic white boy. He wasn't good for Joey, she wasn't good for him, and I would argue they didn't actually really love each other romantically — they just had a twisted sense of ownership over each other that neither quite wanted to relinquish, but Dawson in particular. NASA, as in the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was assigning the grade. The team, calling itself the A-State Science Support System, stepped into its WebEx time slot, following students from Columbia University and Notre Dame, to present its experiment proposal to NASA scientists. Their Student Payload Opportunity with Citizen Science (SPOCS) project was selected by NASA's Office of STEM Engagement as one of five in the country to be carried out in 2022 on the International Space Station.
