A Marietta businessman was sentenced Thursday to eight years in prison for orchestrating a multimillion-dollar bribery and money laundering scheme to secure contracts with the Honduran government, officials at the U.S. Department of Justice wrote in a press release. Carl Alan Zaglin, 70, of Marietta, Georgia, was also ordered to forfeit more than $2 million following his conviction in September on charges tied to a nearly five-year conspiracy to bribe Honduran officials, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. According to court documents and trial evidence, Zaglin — the owner and CEO of Atlanco LLC, a Georgia-based supplier of law enforcement uniforms and gear — paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to officials at TASA, a Honduran government agency responsible for procuring goods for the country’s National Police. From March 2015 through November 2019, Zaglin authorized approximately $2.5 million in payments through Aldo Nestor Marchena, a Florida-based intermediary who submitted sham invoices. In return, Honduran officials, including former TASA Executive Director Francisco Roberto Cosenza Centeno and former Titular Director Juan Ramon Molina, awarded Atlanco contracts worth more than $10 million and expedited payments, prosecutors said. If that happens, the country will enter an era in which outbreaks are common again. More children would be hospitalized because of this preventable disease. Some would lose their hearing. Some would die. Measles is also expensive. A new study — not yet published in a scientific journal — estimates that the public health response to outbreaks with only a couple of cases costs about $244,000. When a patient requires hospital care, costs average $58,600 per case. The study’s estimates suggest that an outbreak the size of the one in West Texas earlier this year, with 762 cases and 99 hospitalizations, costs about $12.6 million. America’s status hinges on whether the country’s main outbreaks this year stemmed from the big one in West Texas that officially began Jan. 20. The nineteenth-century, three-storey Eyton Hall, near the village of Eyton northwest of Leominster, is owned by the Dale family which also owns the Frank H Dale steelworks in the town. A planning application lodged in May last year proposed reducing its current 17 bedrooms to nine, with the freed-up space to be occupied by office and “research and development” space, plus four bunk rooms and a new on-site sewage treatment plant. By Rebecca Gaunt The future of the controversial downtown Kennesaw shop Wildman’s Civil War Surplus is unknown as the late owner’s estate undergoes a forensic accounting and audit after a yearlong court battle between trustees. The store has occupied its spot at 2879 North Main St. since Dent Myers opened it in 1971. It has drawn controversy for its Confederate memorabilia, racist collectibles, and Ku Klux Klan robe on display. Confederate flags and a sign proclaiming “White History Year” are displayed on the exterior of the shop. Marjorie Lyon, a friend and employee of Myers, was named a co-executor and co-trustee of his estate, alongside Myers’s sister Janice Bagwell. Lyon obtained a new business license following Myers’ death at age 90 in 2022 and reopened the store. Former city council member James “Doc” Eaton resigned in protest over the city’s decision to issue the license. Bagwell filed for a temporary restraining order and interlocutory injunction against Lyons in November 2024. She alleged that in 2019 Myers signed a handwritten addendum to the 2013 trust appointing Bagwell the sole trustee, and that it terminated the original provision that Lyon would continue operating the business and maintain the home. Georgia gasoline prices fell over the past seven days leading up to December 1, according to AAA’s weekly report.  The charging rate at EV DC fast-charging stations remained stable at an average of 38 cents per kilowatt-hour (home charging is much less expensive). “As the holiday traffic thins out across the Peach state, Georgia drivers are finding a bit of relief at the pump,” AAA the Auto Club Group, posted in its weekly press release. “After a week of elevated demand leading into Thanksgiving, the state’s average now stands at $2.82 per gallon as of Monday, though daily fluctuations remain likely.” Cobb County gasoline price average The price of a gallon of regular unleaded in Cobb County averages about $2.89, seven cents greater than the statewide average.
