Amazon’s Jeff Blackburn, who leads the company’s media and entertainment businesses, is retiring from Amazon for a second time, according to emails from Blackburn and CEO Andy Jassy on Friday. With Blackburn’s departure, there will be some shifts in Amazon’s org chart. Mike Hopkins, who heads up Prime Video, Amazon Studios, and MGM, will report directly to Jassy. Steve Boom will add Audible, Twitch, and Amazon’s games division to his current responsibilities overseeing the company’s music and podcasting groups. He’ll also report directly to Jassy.Blackburn first retired from his job as SVP of business and corporate development in February 2021 after a year-long sabbatical but was back in his current role that May. Since his return, Amazon has had some major entertainment launches, like the first season of its expensive The Rings of Power TV series and the kickoff of its exclusive Thursday Night Football games, which it will have for 11 years.Blackburn, who originally joined Amazon in 1997, is set to officially retire once more in January. Spurs Give, the official nonprofit organization of the Spurs Sports and Entertainment, hosted the event which allowed Jones and popular Twitch and YouTube streamer SypherPK the opportunity to give back to the children by donating gaming consoles and playing with the patients. Amongst Jones being two months into the NBA season and SypherPK streaming on multiple platforms daily, the two wanted to spread joy in their community. After announcing additional protections to prevent minors from accessing broadcasts to reduce the number of reports of virtual abuse, the platform this week announced a new tool called “Shield Mode”, which promises to protect streamers against coordinated hate attacks. Shield Mode, Twitch’s new tool, allows streamers to fend off brigade activities or coordinated hate campaigns, which have multiplied exponentially over the last few months. By pressing this new button, the streamer activates a series of new and pre-existing functions on the platform, reminiscent of a kind of Panic Button that was created by external developers and which has become very popular recently.. The U.S. Army uses billions of dollars to bolster its already massive military, also spending on advertising and sponsorship in gaming in the effort to bring more soldiers into the fold. Sponsoring events like ESL’s CS:GO tournaments doesn’t seem to be the last step for the U.S. military in the gaming sphere, however, as streamers were the next choice for the front line of the army’s advertising.  According to Vice, “internal Army documents” shared by Motherboard disclose that the U.S. military planned on sponsoring Call of Duty events, but after recent sexual harassment allegations within Activision, they decided against the sponsorships. The documents shared the military’s target audience, with a primary “focus on the growth target of females, Black & Hispanics” and people aged 18 to 24. $3.8 million was spread across several different organizations, with WWE, Twitch, the Call of Duty League, and the Paramount Plus Halo television series acquiring large portions of the funds provided.
