A new report has alleged that child predators use Twitch to target children using its streaming platform, and the company has now responded, calling the statistics “deeply upsetting”. The report, published by Bloomberg, alleges that 1,976 Twitch users exhibited “unusual patterns of behaviour” indicating that many of them primarily exist on Twitch in order to catalogue, watch and manipulate children using the streaming service. The study ran from October 2020 to August 2022, and in this almost two-year period it was alleges that 279,016 children were targeted by hundreds of accounts. These online predators could entice children to perform suggestive dances or explicit acts, the report found. Twitch has responded to the report with an emailed statement emphasising the steps it has taken so far to address the security of minors on the platform. “Preventing child harm is one of our most fundamental responsibilities as a society,” it said. “We do not allow children under 13 to use Twitch, and preventing our service for being used for harm is one of our biggest priorities.” Despite the fact that the platform is not meant to be used by…

Twitch has issued a response to Wednesday's report. This hasn't been a good day for Twitch. A new report has suggested that nearly 2,000 users have been systemically following underage users across the platform. A significant number of those users have exhibited strange patterns that suggest they may be cataloging children's livestreams. "Bloomberg verified that the 1,976 accounts had numerous children in their following lists," reads the Bloomberg report. "Bloomberg also reviewed live video recordings and other documentation and analysis by the researcher. In the course of reporting, Bloomberg discovered additional live videos and predatory accounts not cataloged by the researcher, suggesting the problem could be even more widespread than the data portrays." Of the nearly 2,000 accounts cited, Bloomberg observed various grooming tactics and other unsettling actions at work. The report acknowledges that Twitch has increased the size of its law enforcement response team and has worked with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in an effort to curb these activities. Twitch has updated its regulations on gambling on the streaming platform, following an outcry from streamers. The new policy prohibits streaming of gambling sites that include slots, roulette, or dice games that aren't licensed in the US or "other jurisdictions that provide sufficient consumer protection" from 18th October. The fallout regarding a Twitch streamer’s gambling scam has taken a dramatic and disturbing turn as one streamer involved has been accused of “covering up” a sexual assault.Yesterday, news broke that ItsSliker scammed fellow streamers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to support a sports gambling addiction. That news, in turn, prompted several prominent streamers, including Pokimane, Asmongold, and HasanAbi, to call for the banning of slot gambling on Twitch despite the fact Sliker’s gambling wasn’t slots. Over the weekend, Twitch streamer Abraham “Sliker” Mohammed admitted that he had scammed fellow streamers and fans out of more than $200,000 to pay for a gambling addiction. In a confession video, Sliker explained that he had frequently borrowed money from those around him after lying about where the money was going. The streamer started gambling with skins from Counter-Strike: Global Offensive but eventually found he could bet on the game with real money, escalating things further. Sliker expressed remorse for his actions and promised to pay back those he owed. A 2016 report by Polygon found that betting on Counter-Strike skins had become a massive market valued as high as $7 billion that year. Those interviewed described similar stories of how betting with skins acted as an entry point for real-money gambling, with bigger and bigger buy-ins and increasingly large losses.
