Months after streamers called on Twitch to do better, it's finally rolling out a tool to combat abuse. Twitch is rolling out machine learning in the ongoing fight against abusers on the platform. For months, those looking to harass marginalised streamers have seemed to be able to do so unchallenged, but this new tool could stop their attacks before they even begin. Suspicious User Detection will look for certain negative "signals" in users, and if they are deemed suspicious, automatically ban them from using chat. It's not known exactly what these signals will be, but from the screenshots shared in the announcement, we can see that being first-time chat users and possible ban evaders will be among the red flags. "When you ban someone from your channel, they should be banned from your community for good. Unfortunately, bad actors often choose to create new accounts, jump back into Chat, and continue their abusive behavior", reads the announcement. The solution, in Twitch's eyes, is this tool that sorts potential abusers into two categories: "likely" and "possible" ban evaders. Suspicious User Detection will flag channel ban evaders. Twitch has launched a Suspicious User Detection tool to help safeguard streamers and their chat from abuse.The tool comes in the wake of hate raids and harassment on the platform, particularly for streamers from marginalised communities.It aims to catch users evading channel-level bans, powered by machine learning, by highlighting potentially suspicious activity in chat."When you ban someone from your channel, they should be banned from your community for good. Twitch is introducing a new machine learning feature to help streamers protect their channels from people attempting to avoid bans. Dubbed "Suspicious User Detection," the tool will automatically flag individuals it suspects may be "likely" or "possible" ban dodgers. In cases involving the former, Twitch will prevent any messages they send from showing up in chat. It will also identify those individuals for streamers and any mods helping them with their channel. At that point, they can decide if they want to ban that person. By default, possible repeat trolls can send messages in chat, but they too will be flagged by the system. Additionally, Twitch says creators have the option to prevent them from sending any messages in the first place. YouTube Gaming has been aggressively luring Twitch creators to its platform, and the latest to defect is "Ludwig" Ahgren. Ludwig is perhaps best known for his marathon streaming session that allowed him to break the Twitch all-time subscriber record held by Ninja, eventually hitting 283,066 all-time active subs. Ludwig broke the news in an amusing Twitter video that showed him driving with his manager "Slime" in a purple car that eventually explodes after they get out. He then jumps into a red model, driving home the point that he's leaving team purple for team red. "It's pretty much the same one," says Slime. "Yeah, it's just like a different color," Ludwig replies. When they walked out the front door, they emerged to find four guns being pointed at them and saw several Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers surrounding their home. Elix told NBC News that she was told that dispatch received a call accusing her of murdering her brother and was about to kill herself too. But after speaking with police, it was revealed that Elix was the victim of a horrific swatting prank – a term used when someone calls law enforcement to report a serious crime or situation, leading to officers arriving at the target’s home.
