If Claude Plays Pokémon is supposed to offer a glimpse of AI's future, it's not a very convincing showcase. For the past month and counting, Twitch has watched Anthropic's chatbot struggle to play Pokémon Red. Across multiple runs, Claude has failed to beat the nearly 30 year old game. And yet for David Hershey, the project's lead developer, the showcase has been a success."I wanted some place where I could understand how Claude handles situations where it needs to work over a very long period of time," Hershey explains to me over a video call. Twitch is refunding subscriptions to banned streamers following a Dexerto investigation. An attorney has also asked for affected users to reach out, in order to pursue a “potential class action” suit. On April 3, Dexerto published findings that permanently banned streamers and streamers with deleted accounts had continued to receive payments from subscribers, even though their channels were completely inaccessible. Twitch’s public policy states that their recurring subscriptions should have been canceled. Two of the indefinitely banned streamers were also unbanned within 24 hours after Dexerto reached out to Twitch for comment. The Amazon-owned platform said that these situations were “edge cases” but confirmed that all banned streamers have a “grace period” before their subs are canceled. The length of the grace period was not specified. In the time since, subscribers have begun to receive refunds or had their ongoing subscriptions canceled, but it’s not clear how many users will be getting money back. Gaming platform Overwolf saw a 15% increase in monthly programmatic revenue between February and March, year-over-year, since joining The Trade Desk‘s supply path optimization effort, OpenPath, in December. The private company wouldn’t share more specific financials. It reportedly generated $50 million in ad sales in 2022, but told ADWEEK that this has “increased significantly.” Overwolf did note that a “very low” amount of that 15% revenue growth comes from the cost savings of bypassing the supply-side platform fees, which can vary between 10% and 30%. Two of the competition's biggest watch parties streams are reportedly unable to broadcast, according to people from both broadcasts.
