Filmmaker Addison Wright Turns His Lens to An Inspirational Chicago Dance Troupe in …

Addison Wright’s Hiplet: Because We Can is part of the Scene In Color Film Series, presented by Target, which shines a light on incredible filmmaking talent. As part of the series, three emerging filmmakers will receive mentorship from producer Will Packer, and their films are available to watch on Rotten Tomatoes, MovieClips Indie Channel, Peacock, and the NBC App. They have the “sexy walk;” “the pretzel;” “the dougie;” “the Vivian.” These aren’t 1950s innuendoes. They’re the dance moves performed by a special Chicago-based ballet company. Founded by Homer Hans Bryant, hiplet is a combination of hip-hop and traditional ballet performed to dizzying, intoxicating effect by a collection of incredible local dancers. Director Addison Wright, another Chicago native, decided to make a film about these viral sensations after discovering the troupe on Instagram. His eight-minute documentary short, Hiplet: Because We Can, was an Official Selection at the 2020 South by Southwest Film Festival, later became a Vimeo Staff pick, and is now part of the Scene in Color Film Series.  Wright’s film, titled after the dance, fuses together a choreographed music video feel with a precise documentary style for a lively exploration of this new invigorating movement style. Though the performers’ movements speak for…

Karl Poyzer on his creative journey, finding joy in 3D, and creating a Vimeo staff pick – The Verge

Image by Karl Poyzer How a director of photography learned to create without physical limits By Alex Castro Sep 3, 2021, 12:00pm EDT Images by Karl Poyzer Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists have had their mediums closed off to them. With the limitations set on production teams and the complex logistics of getting back on set, some artists have had to find new ways to express themselves — like Karl Poyzer, a director of photography who took the time during the pandemic to dive into 3D artwork in Blender, with the goal of having fun and doing things his own way. This track would not only allow him to develop a fan base and fresh style but also to start a short film series, Floaters, that won a Vimeo Staff pick due to its amazing visuals, efficient storytelling, and — most importantly — its British humor. I got to chat with Poyzer about his journey of getting started in 3D, the development of Floaters, and his tips for getting started in 3D art. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and brevity. Take me to the beginning. How did you get started? As a kid, I was hugely…

George Lucas' Wildest Sequel: The Admirable Audacity of 'More American Graffiti'

No, it’s not the ‘Star Wars’ prequels. Universal Pictures By Meg Shields · Published on September 3rd, 2021 Welcome to The Queue — your daily distraction of curated video content sourced from across the web. Today, we’re watching a video essay on the wildest sequel by director George Lucas: 1979’s More American Graffiti. When a film is especially near and dear to you it can be tempting to avoid its sequels like the plague. Why run the risk of tainting your memory of the original film? Of sullying its hallowed plot beats with the knowledge that the story continues, for better or for worse? A sequel doesn’t even necessarily have to be “bad” for this Schrodinger’s paradox to kick in. It turns out that Bride of Re-Animator is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable follow-up to Stuart Gordon’s original film. But mustering up the courage to finally give it a shot was like pulling teeth because, well, you know, what if it was bad? This whole affair becomes especially tricky when sequels are infamously terrible. Enter: George Lucas, a man whose directorial reputation is inextricably linked to sequelitis. But while his Star Wars prequels are their own can of worms, today we’re interested in his much worse…

Watch: Splendid Hand-Made Animated Short 'The Elephant's Song' | FirstShowing.net

by Alex Billington September 2, 2021Source: Vimeo "The only home I find, is deep within my lonely bones, deep with my mind…" This is magnificent, what a wonderful artistic creation. The Elephant's Song is a marvelous hand-crafted animated short film created by American filmmaker Lynn Tomlinson (she also animated the music video "Ten Degrees of Strange" for Johnny Flynn & Robert Macfarlane). It was made frame by frame using both clay-on-glass and oil pastel animation. Along with some paper craft to add historical context to this story. An old farm dog recounts the true tale of Old Bet, the elephant at the start of the American circus. Featuring a song with lyrics by Sam Saper, singing about the elephant's old lonely bones, as she is forced to work for her human master. This is just magical, not only visually awe-inspiring, but the song they sing makes this an enchanting experience. It is precisely the kind of unforgettable animation that I love stumbling upon and featuring here. Watch below. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "This is the story of Old Bet, the first circus elephant in America, set to a tune sung by…

by Alex Billington September 1, 2021Source: Vimeo Dating sucks these days. But everyone knows that already. Dating is Shit is a lovely animated short film made by filmmaker Adeena Grubb. The story follows a young woman who struggles with dating and all the strange men she encounters. Based in London, Adeena makes hand-crafted animation, with puppets and miniature sets and models. This short, in just under three minutes, has "around 50 characters" seen in "14 miniature sets," and it took her over two years to complete this short. She adds: "I have had a love/hate relationship with this project for a long time, I've almost given up on it a few times over the last few years, thinking it wasn't good enough. I kept at it and recently gave it one final push to get it finished." I highly recommend it - there's so much going on in here. Also: "Watch til the very end for a sneaky happy ending!" Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this. Brief description from Vimeo: "In a world of apps, dick pics and commitment issues, dating can be tiring and can start to take a toll on a person, this animation…
