Blobfest 2021 preview: Cult classic is oozing with new life from where it all began

It crawls, it creeps, it eats you alive! The 1958 cult classic “The Blob” starring Steve McQueen will celebrate its 21st year at the very theater the movie was filmed when The Colonial Theater (in Phoenixville) hosts ‘Blobfest House of Harris.’ The iconic movie house is home to the famous Blob run-out scene. The festivities will take place July 9-11 with another virtual version of the event that normally runs up and down Bridge St. But this year’s theme does make things a bit different than last year. “We don’t want to put ‘virtual’ on another t-shirt,” says Bob Trate, marketing director at The Colonial Theater. Phoenixville's Colonial Theater will host Blobfest 2021. The iconic movie house was the location the famous run-out scene in "The Blob" (1958). (Contributed photo) Last year’s Blobfest was given the virtual treatment as COVID spread and shut down gatherings and theaters across the country. “It was very thrown together at the last minute,” admits Trate, noting how it was the first time they used Vimeo and had to learn as they went. The idea spawned two other virtual offerings from the Blobfest team including October’s “Nightmare on Bridge St.” featuring classic public domain horror…

More than a third of heat-related deaths are caused by climate change making extreme weather …

Governments around the world need to urgently plan for more extreme weather events to prevent people from dying of heat, a climate change expert has urged.Hundreds of people in the northwest US and Canadian province of British Columbia are believed to have died in the past week from heat as they deal with a "heat dome" that has pushed temperatures to 49.6C. Rupert Stuart-Smith, a PhD student at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, told Sky News there is "clear evidence" climate change has a role to play with an increase in heat-related mortality. "Over a third of heat-related deaths are now caused by climate change, the hotter the heatwave the more deaths," he said."We are able to see this by looking at a heatwave and asking what it would have looked like without human-generated greenhouse gas emissions. "Heatwaves as intense as we're seeing would have been far less intense, would have been cooler without climate change." He said governments have a big role to play in adapting to and being prepared for more extreme weather events. "Some of the most deadly events are happening to places you historically did not need to prepare for serious heatwaves."The Pacific Northwest - historically…

New video streaming service launches for Hoosier-focused documentaries

Making a film is challenging in its own right—and then finding a way to get that film to audiences presents a whole different difficulty. “I know a lot of filmmakers who work really, really hard and tell a great story, but then it just gets put on Facebook or Vimeo, and very, very few people see it,” said Rocky Walls, a documentary filmmaker and the cofounder of Noblesville-based video production company 12 Stars Media. Rocky Walls That dilemma led to the creation of Hoodox, a new video streaming service for Indiana-focused documentaries and other non-fiction content. The service launched June 17 at www.watchhoodox.com with a library of 30 titles from filmmakers from around the state. The service is operated by an all-volunteer not-for-profit Indianapolis-based organization that is also called Hoodox. Walls serves as the organization’s executive director. He’s also part of a 16-person Hoodox board of directors whose members include Heartland Film Festival Artistic Director Greg Sorvig and Indy Film Fest Executive Director Dan Moore, among others from both the film and communications/marketing industries. You can think of Hoodox as a much smaller and tightly focused version of Netflix or other streaming services. Hoodox members pay $10 per month or…
