Anti-Issa Video Played Role in Facebook Shutdown of 'Defend East County' Group

Share This Article:Image of Darrell Issa in video labeled “A message from Q,” the supposed leader of the far-right QAnon conspiracy cult. A video attributed to “Q” calls Darrell Issa someone who protects child abusers and opposes President Trump. It urges a vote for a founder of the Defend East County private group on Facebook.Support Times of San Diego's growthwith a small monthly contribution The video, posted Oct. 26 on Vimeo, apparently played a role Saturday in Facebook shutting down DEC, as it’s called, according to a person involved in alerting Facebook. The controversial group was created in the wake of the La Mesa riots in May. The video ends with the repeated suggestion to “write in” Justin Haskins, a DEC founder, presumably for the 50th Congressional District race in East County that includes Issa. Haskins’ group reached 22,000 members, and he now posts via at least one other group — DEC Conservatives, which includes a DEC logo but lists only 889 members.

VSU TV plans to cover elections

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University mass media program will present a live election results broadcast, 8:30-11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, on VSU TV. “My colleagues, students, and I have been planning and training for this moment for weeks,” said Alicia Pryor, a Department of Communication Arts faculty member in charge of leading the VSU TV class. “This special event is sure to be an exciting experiential learning opportunity for the students as well as an excellent resource for our friends and neighbors in the community.” VSU TV’s live election results broadcast will feature the mass media program’s "talented student reporters, student anchors and student-led technical crew reporting Election Day 2020 results for the presidential race, key Senate races in Georgia and other states and more," university officials said in a statement. The special will feature journalists from the Department of English’s journalism program and expert political analysis by Dr. Mandi Bates Bailey, a professor in the Department of Political Science; Dr. James LaPlant, dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and a professor in the Department of Political Science; and Dr. David Nelson, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Arts’ communication program.  Mediacom subscribers may view the live election results broadcast on Channel 16. The show will be streamed on the mass media program’s Vimeo page at https://vimeo.com/user103089813. During fall semester 2019, VSU’s Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion kicked off a BLAZE the Ballot initiative designed to inspire the VSU student community to take an active role in cultivating positive change through civic engagement, university officials said. This includes voting in the Nov. 3 election. “For the past year, we have had students facilitating learning opportunities in person and virtually about the democratic process,” said Sandra Y.G. Vimeo Releases Video Calling, Zoom Encrypts Meetings, Monday.com's IPO and More News

PHOTO: visuals on Unsplash. It was promised a long time ago – well a couple of months ago anyway – and it has finally arrived. Zoom announced that its end-to-end encryption (EE2E) is now available globally for all users. Originally, San Jose, Calif.-based Zoom had said it would only offer encryption for paid users but after global outrage it backed down and said everyone could have it. The result is that Zoom will have encrypted meetings for up to 200 participants. Initially, it is available immediately as a technical preview. This means that the company is proactively soliciting feedback from users for the next 30 days. It also means that starting this week E2EE is available on Zoom desktop client version 5.4.0 for Mac and PC, the Zoom Android app and Zoom Rooms, with the Zoom iOS app pending Apple App Store approval. The introduction of E2EE is in response to the problems Zoom had earlier this summer when the company had major problems with privacy and securing data as huge numbers of people began using Zoom after remote working kicked in. Things got so bad that it became the subject of numerous investigations into privacy breaches, claims the company was sending user data to Facebook and, of course, Zoom bombing, a practice whereby uninvited guests interrupt conference calls with unwanted comments and even pornography. In response, CEO Eric Yuan announced that Zoom was buying Keybase, a company that had built a secure messaging and file sharing service using its deep encryption and security expertise. According to a statement from Yuan at the time, Zoom aimed to integrate Keybase’s entire team into Zoom and use that team to build end-to-end encryption that can be applied to Zoom services. That is effectively what has happened and now Zoom communications are encrypted.…

Vimeo Removes Video Showing Ties Between Pro-China Group, Black Lives Matter Founder

A popular video platform has removed a video critical of apparent connections between the Chinese Communist Party and a founder of the Black Lives Matter organization.  New Zealand investigative journalist and author Trevor Loudon said the video was posted on Vimeo for only “a few hours” and had about 1,600 viewers before Vimeo took it down.  “It really touched a nerve for Vimeo to take it down after just a few hours,” Loudon told The Daily Signal in a phone interview.  The move by the New York-based video hosting and sharing platform follows a pattern of major tech companies such as Twitter and Facebook restricting or censoring conservative content.  The six-minute video, produced by Choose Freedom, a conservative group with which Loudon is associated, currently is posted and viewable on Rumble.  The video highlights various connections among activists. One group is Asians for Black Lives, founded by members of the Chinese Progressive Association of San Francisco, a pro-China group with ties to the Chinese government and the Chinese Communist Party. The video also underlines connections between the San Francisco-based Chinese Progressive Association and Black Futures Lab, a group started by Black Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza. In an analysis by Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation and former editorial writer and reporter for The Wall Street Journal, The Daily Signal first reported on the connection between China and the Black Futures Lab, which shares a founder with Black Lives Matter. Left-leaning media outlets immediately criticized Gonzalez’s reporting.  Loudon noted that Kevin Roose, the same reporter for The New York Times who criticized Gonzalez’s reporting for The Daily Signal, also did a negative piece on The Epoch Times, a newspaper that covers the Chinese government with a critical eye. Loudon contributes to The Epoch Times. Vimeo did not immediately…

Watch Joji's Renaissance painting-inspired video for '777'

Joji has released a music video for the song ‘777’ from his latest album ‘Nectar’. Directed by New York-based artist Saad Moosajee, the video brings elements of a Renaissance painting to life to create a contemporary depiction of Heaven. The ‘777’ video is an Apple Music exclusive, but fans can watch it on production company Pomp & Clout’s Vimeo page. Watch the full video below. In a behind-the-scenes video – also an Apple Music Exclusive – producer Russell Greene explained that since they couldn’t involve too many people in the video due to COVID-19 restrictions, they used motion capture on dancer and choreographer Maya Man for its the characters. “We decided to use motion capture as a very effective and creative tool and allow our performer to play all these different characters in various scenes,” Greene said. “As the video progressed, it’s been wild to see my movement on all these different characters in all different colours and shapes. It was really special,” Man added. Moosajee said that they used Unreal Engine, a 3D creation tool owned by Fortnite developer Epic Games, to create the visual effects. The music video is an exclusive release as part of Apple’s newly launched 24-hour music video livestream channel, Apple Music TV. ‘777’ is a track from Joji’s sophomore album ‘Nectar,’ released last September on 88rising. It’s the second music video from the album, with the first being ‘Your Man’ back in September. On October 23, the Japanese-American singer recently held a one-night-only online concert called Joji Presents: The Extravaganza. The concert saw Joji donning various outfits (including a Minion costume), and doing activities like cooking an egg, playing circus parlour games, and refereeing an MMA match. Watch 88rising’s recap video below.
