Mike de Leon's 'Kisapmata' which stars Charo Santos available for streaming today

Charo Santos as Mila in Mike de Leon’s “Kisapmata” (Image: screengrab from YouTube/Citizen Jake) Renowned filmmaker Mike de Leon’s 1981 film “Kisapmata,” which stars a young Charo Santos, is available for free streaming only today, Dec. 19. De Leon uploaded the restored version of the classic film through his “Citizen Jake” account on the video-sharing platform Vimeo. The film became available for viewing earlier at 7 a.m. and will only be up until 11 p.m. “Kisapmata,” based on the true and chilling murder-suicide case of the Cabading family back in 1961, was inspired by Nick Joaquin’s (writing under his pseudonym Quijano de Manila) telling of the events through the crime report “The House on Zapote Street,” which was published in the Philippines Free Press magazine. The grim case of the Cabadings involves family patriarch Pablo and wife Asuncion getting into a domestic dispute. In a gruesome turn of events, the dispute ended with Pablo, a police detective, shooting his wife, their only daughter Lydia and son-in-law Leonardo, before he shot and killed himself as well. In “Kisapmata,” Santos plays Milagros “Mila” Carandang, the daughter of retired police officer Diosdado “Dadong” Carandang, who was played by Vic Silayan. The impressive ensemble…

WhatsApp is testing voice and video calls on desktop, gearing up to take on Zoom and Google Meet

WhatsApp calling on desktop is rolling out to select users, allowing them to make voice and video calls from their desktop and laptop. The WhatsApp desktop calling feature is currently rolling out in the beta channel, but availability will likely be expanded over the coming days. Up until now, WhatsApp calling was limited only to the mobile app. Apart from this, WhatsApp is also testing features like mute video, advanced wallpaper and more. WhatsApp voice and video calling is moving beyond just smartphones and onto desktops of users. This feature will now allow users to make or receive WhatsApp calls directly using their PCs or laptops in a move that may threaten Google Meet and Zoom’s market share. The two services saw a boom in users during the COVID-19 pandemic due to more people working from home and using video conferencing to connect with the outside world. The key differentiator between them and WhatsApp is that the latter is mostly used for personal calls. But, that may be set to change as it makes its way to desktops and larger screens. Even though the feature is only rolling out for a limited number of users on the beta channel right…

Malicious Browser Extensions for Social Media Infect Millions of Systems

At least 28 third-party add-ons for top social media sites, including Facebook and Vimeo, redirect users to phishing sites and steal data.More than two dozen malicious programs posing as third-party extensions for top social media sites have been downloaded some 3 million times, surreptitiously redirecting users to phishing sites, displaying advertisements, and stealing data, antivirus firm Avast reports. The cybercriminals behind the 28 third-party extensions camouflaged the malicious functionality as a variety of add-on features — such as video downloaders and direct message apps — for social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, SoundCloud, and Vimeo. The extensions are written in JavaScript, can exfiltrate information on the user, and can download and execute additional malicious code, Avast stated in a report published today. The company found no evidence of the extensions being used as a bridge into corporate networks, but attackers may have the ability to download and inject arbitrary JavaScript into any tab, says Jan Rubín, a malware researcher at Avast. "This could be used to gather credentials and other sensitive corporate data from the websites visited by the victim," he says. "We are preparing a technical blog post with more technical information and IoCs, but for now, we can…
