Snapchat's AI Chatbot Under Spotlight For Child Privacy Concerns – Arab Times

This post has been read 491 times! The Information Commissioner’s Office has issued a warning regarding the potential closure of the My AI feature in the UK following a preliminary investigation. LONDON, Oct 6, (Agencies): The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has issued a warning regarding the potential closure of the My AI feature in the UK following a preliminary investigation. The US-based company, Snap, which owns Snapchat, has stated that it is carefully reviewing the initial findings. My AI is a feature that allows users to engage in conversations with a computer program designed to mimic human interaction. Snapchat characterizes it as an “evolving feature” powered by ChatGPT, an online AI tool known for convincingly imitating realistic responses. Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, made headlines earlier this year by becoming the first social media platform to introduce an AI-powered chat function. With 21 million users in the UK, including many children, concerns have arisen regarding the potential privacy risks for users aged 13 to 17, prompting the ICO’s interest. Snap has expressed its willingness to cooperate with the ICO following the issuance of a preliminary notice. The company emphasized that it had conducted a comprehensive legal and privacy review

Snapchat's AI chatbot may pose privacy risk to children, says UK watchdog – HT Tech

Home Tech News Snapchat's AI chatbot may pose privacy risk to children, says UK watchdog Snapchat may have failed to properly assess privacy risks to children from its artificial intelligence chatbot, Britain's data watchdog said on Friday, adding it would consider the company's response before making any final enforcement decision. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said if the U.S. company fails to adequately address the regulator's concerns, "My AI", launched in April, could be banned in the UK. "The provisional findings of our investigation suggest a worrying failure by Snap to adequately identify and assess the privacy risks to children and other users before launching 'My AI'", Information Commissioner John Edwards said. The findings do not necessarily mean the instant messaging app used largely by younger people has breached British data protection laws or that the ICO will end up issuing an enforcement notice, the regulator said.Snap said it was reviewing the ICO's notice and that it was committed to user privacy."My AI went through a robust legal and privacy review process before being made publicly available," a Snap spokesperson said. "We will continue to work constructively with the ICO to ensure they're comfortable with our risk assessment procedures."The ICO is

Snap Faces Potential Suspension of AI Chatbot in UK – Pymnts.com

Snap has been issued with a preliminary enforcement notice by the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) over potential failure to properly assess the privacy risks posed by its generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, My AI. The ICO’s investigation provisionally found that Snap, the parent company of popular social media platform Snapchat, failed to adequately identify and assess the risks to My AI users in the U.K., including children aged 13 to 17, the ICO said in a Friday (Oct. 6) press release. Reached by PYMNTS, a Snap spokesperson said in a statement that the company is closely reviewing the ICO’s provisional decision. “Like the ICO we are committed to protecting the privacy of our users,” the statement said. “In line with our standard approach to product development, My AI went through a robust legal and privacy review process before being made publicly available. We will continue to work constructively with the ICO to ensure they’re comfortable with our risk assessment procedures.” According to the ICO’s press release, if a final enforcement notice is adopted, Snap may be required to stop processing data in connection with My AI, which would mean suspending the My AI product for U.K. users until an adequate risk assessment is conducted. Deadly Waltham shooting began with 'intense argument' on Snapchat, prosecutors say – NBC Boston

A deadly shooting in Waltham, Massachusetts, this May began with an argument on a Snapchat group call and took place while the call was still going, prosecutors said Friday. They were in Waltham District Court for the arraignment of Josh Pierre, the Waltham man accused of fatally shooting Shelson Jules, 22, in the city early in the morning on May 22, 2023. A not guilty plea was entered on Pierre's behalf and the 21-year-old, who was arrested in Florida last month, was held without bail. The gunfire on Lyman Street near Faneuil Road damaged a nearby home and pickup truck, and left neighbors shocked. Prosecutors said that investigators found witnesses to the incident who told them it unfolded over a call on Snapchat. Residents were startled to see investigators combing for clues Monday after a man was shot to death earlier in the day. "There was this very intense argument which escalated to a point at which were trying to essentially rendezvous to basically fight," assistant district attorney Graham Van Epps said. "This call continued until there were gunshots heard," he added. People who were at the intersection where the argument spilled from social media
