Man sentenced to 20 years for kidnapping, sexual assault of 2 girls – KMOV

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) - A St. Louis man was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting two 12-year-old girls he met on SnapChat. St. Louis prosecutors said in a news release 20-year-old Adrian R. Neal pleaded guilty to counts of kidnapping, child molestation, statutory rape and two counts statutory sodomy. Circuit Judge Bryan Hettenbach remanded Neal to the Missouri Department of Corrections following the hearing. Court records show Neal was set to appear at trial this week on those charges. Prosecutors said the girls reported meeting Neal in August 2022 on SnapChat, an anonymous social messaging platform. Neal then picked them up and took them to his home or another location where he sexually assaulted them. Neal took a cellphone from one of the girls so she couldn’t call for help, prosecutors said. He then refused to take her home and raped her in his vehicle. Neal also has kidnapping and statutory sodomy charges pending in a separate case in St. Louis County, court records show. In that case he is accused of trapping a woman in his car and sexually assaulting her in September 2021 in Kirkwood. He is set to appear at trial in

Feds target Snapchat smugglers in wave of arrests – Washington Times

The Snapchat post must have seemed too good to be true: up to $20,000 in quick cash, just for “a few hours of driving.” Authorities say Ramon Moreno-Lopez meant it. He was in the migrant-smuggling business and was looking for drivers to help get the migrants from the border deeper into the U.S., where they would spread out and head to their final destinations. Prosecutors in Arizona last week announced an indictment against Mr. Moreno-Lopez charging him with alien smuggling, part of a broader takedown that has netted nearly two dozen people using social media to sneak in illegal immigrants. Authorities pored over cellphone data and social media accounts to sniff out 22 people, including Mr. Moreno-Lopez, whom they have charged with being Snapchat smugglers. The recruiting ads are particularly successful with minors, who are told they will be released if caught because the feds usually don’t bother making cases against juveniles. “Many of the posts claim drivers can make large sums of money without the risk of being arrested,” the U.S. attorney’s office in Arizona said in announcing the slate of charges. The U.S. attorney declined to say more about what led to the effort against social media smugglers

There's a reason why queer folks are turning to online spaces like Snapchat and Tumblr

As my once-beloved Twitterverse crumbles around me—even the name “Twitter” lopped down to “er” before finishing its metamorphosis into the nondescript X—the push to new platforms continues. Personally, I’ve joined the throngs of users seeking a new social media home. While Meta’s Threads left me confused, no one I know has yet to migrate to Mastodon, and when it comes to Bluesky, well … I’m still waiting to be let in.  Through the shifting social media landscape, I’ve found the renewed interest in older platforms—platforms that I’d relegated to my own digital past—to be strangely comforting. I’m not the only one. Writing for Yahoo! Finance, for instance, journalist Samantha Delouya observed that there’s a correlation between Musk’s Twitter takeover and user growth for the microblogging service Tumblr. Erin Griffith noted similar trends for the photo and video-sharing platform Snapchat in an article for the New York Times.  The really interesting thing about this growth is that it’s largely a result of young users joining these platforms even while older ones are aging out and moving on. According to a Pew Research Center study, 59 percent of teens commonly use Snapchat. Tumblr reported similar numbers, stating that 48 percent of its
