May 26—KINGWOOD — The Preston Board of Education is considering adding metal detectors as a further safety measure at Preston County schools. At Monday's meeting, a local resident told board members her child, a student at Preston High, recently received a death threat on Snapchat. She said the threat indicated her child would be shot while at school. The Snapchat app opens to a device's camera, so users can take a photo or video, add a caption and send it."The sheriff and the school has the evidence, " she said. "I think metal detectors cost between 4 and 5 thousand dollars each and would protect our schools if violence breaks out."She said she knew a weapon had been found at the high school and indicated it was a knife."I know it's inconvenient, but inconvenience can't compare with the loss of a child, " she said.BOE President Jack Keim said Superintendent of Schools Steve Wotring would get information about metal detectors and have it available for a future meeting. Also speaking at the meeting was Holly Funk. Funk offered ways to better integrate LGBTQ students into schools. She suggested several websites that offered resources for educators and students to better ensure LGBTQ students are…

Facebook Dark Mode Disappears From Android & iOS Apps: Is It Gone For Good?

After a long period of testing the feature, Facebook seems to have removed dark mode support on Android and iOS through the latest app updates. Facebook’s dark mode option appears to have disappeared from the Android and iPhone apps, and it currently remains unclear why or how many users are affected. The option to enable a darker theme has become increasingly popular with users and app developers, with Apple and iOS also adding their own system-wide dark theme support as well. In recent years, the number of apps that now support dark mode has been steadily increasing. However, there are still a number of popular apps that have yet to adopt the feature or make it available on both platforms. For example, although Snapchat dark mode can be enabled on an iPhone, it has yet to arrive on Android. In Facebook’s case, the company tested the feature with users throughout 2020, before making it widely available to all users. Although available, a number of users have recently been taking to Twitter and elsewhere to confirm an issue with Facebook’s dark mode support. Essentially, the option to enable the darker theme has disappeared completely for them. The reports indicate that this is a…

Snapchat: Happy to pay a 30 percent commission to Apple

Not all IT giants face the legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple over the App Store against the iPhone group. Snapchat, among the most popular social media offerings in the top 5 in many countries, has now been explicitly praised by Apple. Its CEO, Evan Spiegel from the parent company Snap, said in an interview that it was “happy” to pay Apple’s 30 percent commission for in-app sales, which it has been demanding for over a decade. “Naturally happy” In the conversation with the US stock market transmitter CNBC The 30-year-old manager said that Snapchat “would not exist without the iPhone and without the fantastic platform that Apple created”. Activists join call for Facebook to drop 'tone-deaf' Instagram for kids plan

More than 150,000 activists and parents have signed a series of petitions urging Facebook to drop its plans to create an Instagram for kids platform, the organizations behind the petitions said Tuesday. The signatories join a growing chorus of advocates and bipartisan lawmakers who have criticized Facebook’s plans, which would create an Instagram platform for children under 13. The three petitions, launched by Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), SumOfUs, and the Juggernaut Project, slam the plan over concerns about skewing children’s self image, harvesting their data, and feeding the addictive nature of social media apps. Josh Golin, executive director of CCFC, accused Facebook’s plan for the new platform of using children as “pawns in its war with TikTok for market share.” “Teens and even adults on Instagram struggle with the never-ending focus on appearance, the relentless fear of missing out, promotion of influencer culture, and the pressure to collect likes. Instagram for young children is among the greediest, most tone-deaf and wrong-headed ideas ever to emerge from Silicon Valley,” Golin said in a statement. Kristin Bride, the mother of a 16-year-old who died by suicide in June, is among those who signed the petitions. Her son, Carson Bride, received 62 anonymous messages “meant to humiliate…

TCAPS Continues Diversity, Antiracism Efforts In Wake Of Snapchat Incident

By Beth Milligan | May 25, 2021 Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) board members received an update Monday on district efforts to increase diversity and inclusivity initiatives in the wake of a racist student incident on Snapchat in April. Efforts including a curriculum audit, staff training, and a proposed antiracist TCAPS board resolution drew criticism from some parents who said the work amounted to indoctrination and an attempt to force critical race theory into the classroom, while several TCAPS staff members defended the process as crucial to providing a school environment where all students feel welcome and safe. The Social Equity Task Force – an internal TCAPS group including students, teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders formed in November to address equity, diversity, and inclusivity issues – provided an update to board members. According to committee members, current focus areas include auditing the district’s K-12 curriculum “through an equity lens,” diversifying TCAPS libraries, expanding learning opportunities for staff, providing support “to lift student voices” in the district’s inclusivity work, and passing a board resolution detailing TCAPS’ commitment to being an antiracist, anti-discriminatory school district. The resolution was originally slated to be reviewed by board members later this summer. However,…
