The Yarn Store Would Like You to Vote

And so would nearly every company out there this year.Oct. 31, 2020, 5:00 a.m. ETA few nights ago, Shana Gadarian, a political scientist at Syracuse University, was ordering a takeout dinner when the DoorDash app suggested she use the time waiting for her order to “make a voting plan.”“Thanks, DoorDash,” she said.As the extended 2020 voting season closes in on Election Day, such messages are inescapable. With banner ads and special photo filters, social media apps like Instagram and Snapchat implore you to vote. Retail clothing companies send emails encouraging civic participation, and they sell merchandise emblazoned with messages to vote.Large companies like Coca-Cola and Delta Air Lines are incorporating get-out-the-vote messages in their advertising and product design. Even small businesses — the dry cleaners, delis and yarn stores of American cities — are using signs to urge customers to vote. The ubiquity of the message, along with the wide range of corporate actors embracing it, is new this year, said several researchers and advocates who closely monitor get-out-the-vote strategies. Voting has become cool this year, and nearly every company wants to share in the feel-good glow of a pro-voting message. The reasons seem to be part pandemic, part the high drama of a highly polarized election, and part pressure from employees and customers.Susan Tynan, chief executive and founder of Framebridge, which makes custom frames for art and mementos, said she was inspired to expand her company’s civic engagement after talking with other C.E.O.s about surviving the early months of the pandemic. Keep up with Election 2020 “There’s just been a shift when C.E.O.s have come together, to say there’s a need for clear communication and planning, and honestly moral leadership,” she said. “So I think we’re all doing our best to try and step in where we can.”Framebridge has emailed its…

The Election Work Diary of a Reporter With 2.5 Million Subscribers

Peter Hamby has found a way to be a political journalist for a new generation. After covering two presidential campaigns at CNN, he made an unusual career move in 2015: joining the social media app Snapchat. As the host of the platform’s first original series, “Good Luck America,” Mr. Hamby, 39, breaks down the political landscape and coming election for the millions of young people who scroll through the app every day.“Politics feels existential to them,” Mr. Hamby said. “Climate change feels existential. Going to high school every day with the threat of gun violence is life or death.”It’s an audience that is most likely not tuning in to cable news bulletins or reading the Sunday New York Times. So he’s meeting these Americans where they are.“I’m aware of where I stand at Snapchat, and a lot of people don’t think that’s necessarily an ivory tower of journalism, but we are creating journalism that I think is credible and serious,” Mr. Hamby said. “It is insanely important for media organizations to be way more thoughtful, way more creative about creating formats for people that plug into their lives.”Now based in Los Angeles, Mr. Hamby, who is also a contributing writer for Vanity Fair, is a world away from his former life as a roving campaign reporter.“I feel like I’ve become smarter about American politics since leaving Washington and leaving the establishment media side of things,” he said.Interviews are conducted by email, text and phone, then condensed and edited.Sunday9 a.m. Reading The Los Angeles Times and listening to Paul Simon’s “Graceland.” For me, Sundays are for reading, cooking and music — trying to turn off as much as possible. That’s obviously close to impossible with two weeks until a presidential election, but I know I won’t be good during the week if…

Snapchat Launches New Friendship Report & Time Capsule Lens With Aussie Band Sheppard

Snap Inc. the parent company of Snapchat, has released its second global Friendship Report, exploring how global issues including the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted friendship and communication in 2020. The findings showed how “social” is being inserted back into social media, with the majority of Aussies using online channels to connect with friends more than ever, and even build new relationships when physical meets aren’t always possible. Off the back of the findings, Snap has launched the Friendship Time Capsule, a collaborative photo collage allowing Snapchatters to create a new shared memory between themselves and a friend. Aussie pop band, Shepperd, has already thrown their support behind the new Lens, releasing Snaps to celebrate their own friendship. Amy, Emma and Geroge Sheppard say that digital communication platforms such as Snapchat have enabled them to remain connected during the craziness of 2020. “We’ve always been such big fans of Snapchat and this year we have experienced first hand its ability to help us  connect and collaborate with one another as siblings and bandmates. We’ve found that Snapchat is a digital platform where we can be the unfiltered and more ‘real’ versions of ourselves with our friends. It’s so easy to send quick video messages to each other on Snapchat. Whether it’s silly faces and dog ears to try or even a quick video of a new musical idea, Snapchat is where we can chat and let off some steam.” Over 1,500 Australians took part in the global friendship study, which shows how social media is being used to connect friends and even build new relationships when physical meets aren’t always possible. Australian data from the global friendship report reveals: Digital communication has been key to combating Australia’s loneliness pandemic. While the majority (53%) of Australians feel lonely when they can’t spend…

What's Snapchat's Local Play?

Snap continues to make moves in local commerce. Historic steps include geo-filters, while more recent activity includes Local Lenses and business listings in Snap Map. These features are notable on their own, but they get more interesting when you view them together and extrapolate to Snap’s local road map. Local Lenses enable shared and persistent AR experiences that are associated with physical locations. The “shared and persistent” part is important, as it lets users create AR experiences that stay anchored to a location — viewable across sessions and between different users. These are the core tenets of the AR Cloud that we often reference. A framework for AR that “just works,” the AR Cloud involves spatial maps and other data that nearby devices can tap into. Because spatial maps for the inhabitable earth are too big to fit on one device, the AR cloud delivers them on demand. As we examined last week in light of Google’s visual search play, tech giants are all building their own versions of an AR cloud that will power their respective local AR products. For instance, Google uses its Street View imagery as an object-recognition database to localize devices and overlay the right graphics. Snapchat hopes to similarly use data from existing and ongoing Snaps that happen in specific locations. That will form a sort of location database that will feed into its Local Lenses. That way, users can pull out their phones to effectively create or discover AR content where they’re standing. If all goes well, the outcome will be the ability to leave persistent AR graphics on local spots. The use case that Snap has promoted is more about fun and whimsy, including painting streets and buildings with digital graffiti. But it could also evolve into commerce-based use cases like storefront UGC. On the Map Next on…

68% of people feel lonely amid coronavirus restrictions, Snapchat study finds

68% of Britons feel lonely at times, up from 61% before the pandemic.SnapchatThe coronavirus lockdown and social distancing measures have caused an increase in loneliness among people in the UK, Snapchat’s latest Friendship Report suggests. The social media platform’s second annual report into the nature of friendship found that 68% of Britons feel lonely at times, up from 61% before the pandemic. The study, which involved 30,000 people, found that nearly half of those asked (49%) said the lack of contact with friends was a key reason they felt more lonely and a third said social distancing had weakened their relationships with friends. To try and address this, the study found that many had turned to digital tools to help them stay in touch. 64% said they were using online communication platforms more now than before the Covid-19 outbreak. And the research also reported that 47% of people said the conversations they were having with friends using these tools were deeper than before. In addition, the pandemic has led some to think about the friendships they’ve lost.According to the study, 88% of those surveyed in the UK say they have lost touch with a close friend from childhood. 70% would now like to rekindle those relationships.Friendship researcher Donya Alinejad, who worked with Snapchat on the study, said virtual communications helped create “co-presence” and a “feeling of being together when you’re actually physically distant”.In response to the findings, Snapchat has announced the launch of its Friendship Time Capsule, where users can create a collaborative photo collage with a friend. The tool invites users to each take a selfie before the app’s machine learning places the two friends together and ages them up through a range of different scenarios set in the future.Snapchat has also published a list of tips and skills on how to be a better…
