I’ve always loved Snapchat for its in-the-moment magic, where chats vanish after viewing. However, the company is shifting that identity with Snapchat’s infinite retention, a new feature that allows you to keep chats forever, if you choose to. It’s handy for keeping memories or plans, but as a long-time user, I’m skeptical about the privacy risks and why Snapchat has added this feature now.  What Infinite Retention Really Changes Snapchat built its name on fleeting messages that disappear after viewing or within 24 hours. The infinite retention feature upends this, letting you save chat history forever. You enable it by selecting Never through Chat and Notification settings under Retention Options, and all participants get a notification with the option to opt out. While the transparency is useful, it also chips away at the ephemeral nature that made Snapchat different from apps like WhatsApp or iMessage. It’s no longer purely about fleeting conversations. James O'Neill, of Cluain Mor Drive in west Belfast, will also spend a further 12 months on licence following his release to deal with his "concerning" interest in children. The 49-year-old had previously pleaded guilty to nine counts of making indecent photographs of a child. O'Neill also admitted to three further offences of possessing extreme pornographic images of children and threatening to disclose a sexual image. Fake accounts made In November 2018, a 16-year-old from England became distressed after nude photographs of her were leaked on messaging app, Snapchat. Belfast Crown Court heard that O'Neill, who was not known to the victim and was 42 at the time of the offences, contacted her within minutes of the photos being uploaded to ask her age. He was told she was 16. She blocked O'Neill, but he continued to create new accounts despite being told by the teenager
