Implants that use tiny electrodes to read or specifically stimulate the firing of neurons in the brain could improve the quality of life for many people in the future. The vision: Those who have neurological limitations, are paralyzed or blind should be able to walk, communicate or see again thanks to such brain-computer interfaces (BCI). There are already first reports of success. Advertisement However, implanted BCIs in humans have so far only been used in a few cases, usually in the context of scientific studies. After all, surgical interventions in the head harbor risks – and the implants that have been used up to now are stuck in the brain tissue like tiny nail boards. They can cause inflammation and scars, which also affects the electrical contacts and thus the performance of the implants. By Circles Robinson HAVANA TIMES – A few weeks ago, we published an article highlighting a new documentary on the life in exile of the famous Nicaraguan singer/songwriter Carlos Mejia Godoy.  Now, the director, Jon Silver, has made the film available at no charge on Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/806217533. The short film, in Spanish with English subtitles, is a “don’t miss” for anyone who followed the Sandinista Revolution of 1979-1990, and now – decades later – has witnessed one of its top leaders, Daniel Ortega, become a cruel dictator with a family dynasty uncannily similar to that of Somoza.  Readers can also access other excellent documentaries on a variety of subjects by Jon Silver at Migrant Media Productions.  Read more from Nicaragua here on Havana Times

JOSH GREEN, M.D. GOVERNOR DAWN CHANG CHAIRPERSON For Immediate Release:  June 22, 2023 RARE HAWAIIAN LAND SNAILS REACH TOP SPEED OF 50 MILES PER HOUR 8,000 Snails Make the Trip to a New Home To view video please click on photo or view at this link: https://vimeo.com/838837071 (HONOLULU) – Granted, they had assistance from the drivers of 10 vehicles, who moved thousands of rare, threatened, and endangered Hawaiian snails from their home in Kailua to new digs in the Pearl City area, this morning. Their caretakers have dubbed the transfer, “The Great Snail Bail,” and believe it could well be a record for the number of protected species moved from one place to another at one time. Dr. David Sischo runs the state’s Snail Extinction Prevention Program and for the past seven years he and his team have cared for 8,000 snails, representing 38 critically imperiled species, from a small trailer. Supervising today’s transfer, Sischo observed, “We had the last individuals in the world of some of these species, all in boxes, traveling over the H-3. These snails may be small, but they are no less important than large charismatic endangered species like monk seals. Imagine moving 8,000 monk seals.”
