SHORT FILMS by Alex Billington April 20, 2023Source: Vimeo "He's being charged with a crime he committed in another life!" Is this the future we're headed towards? Filmmaker Mitch Glass has unveiled his latest short film called Canary, which seems to be a "canary in the coal mine" reference. This low key sci-fi drama is about what will happen when DNA sequencing gets even better. After submitting his DNA to an ancestry company, Paul Dunn is arrested and charged with a crime that was committed decades before his birth. "It's a little conspiracy / sci-fi / thriller that we shot last year," Mitch explains. Starring Isabella Ward, Nathan Hunt, Phillip Garcia, & Micavrie Amaia. This kind of future is actually closer than most might think, as DNA alteration is already a reality – what we do with this tech is still being figured out. "Are we supposed to accept this & not question it?" A very good question. Thanks to Mitch for the tip on this short debuting online. Brief synopsis via Vimeo: "After submitting his DNA to an ancestry company, Paul Dunn is arrested and charged with a crime that was committed decades before his birth." Canary is both

Charlotte cigar & whiskey brand expands through “Whiskgars Cigar & Co.” in Gastonia with plans to rebrand. Menagerie Hospitality Group announces the expansion of The Vintage, Charlotte’s premier membership whiskey and cigar lounge, by acquiring Gastonia’s staple cigar spot, “Whiskgars Cigar & Co.,” at 190 W. Main Ave. For the short term, the Vintage team will operate Whiskgars in its current capacity, leveraging the gorgeous space and amazing team; rebranding to The Vintage Gastonia is a mid-term goal. The Hibberts family founded Whiskgars in 2021, housed in a 90-year-old historical building, breaking the space into a dual lounge layout: a 3,000 sq. ft. non-smoking cocktail bar area and a private 2,500 sq. ft. smoking lounge with a VIP room, walk-in humidor and lockers equipped with two separate HVAC units to cut down smoke migration. Similar to The Vintage Charlotte, the Gastonia lounge serves craft cocktails made by expert bartenders and elevated shareables like charcuterie boards and seasonal tapas plates with hopes to expand the food menu in the lounge’s larger kitchen. The Vintage Gastonia is  an extension of the Charlotte lounge, and the team plans on making only minimal changes, including adding a back patio so members can listen to live

TRAILERS by Alex Billington April 18, 2023Source: Vimeo Come play at this playground, you'll never want to leave… A French Portuguese animator named Rodrigo Goulão de Sousa has created this 60-second trailer as a proof-of-concept for an animated series. I'm not sure any studio would be brave enough to produce this, perhaps only Adult Swim or Shudder or Screambox. Playground is the title of this animated horror series, featuring two kids who end up stuck in a nightmare playground full of endless horrors, monsters, mindfucks, and more. The amount of "WTF is that thing?!?!" creature design he packs into these 60 seconds is just amazing. Look at all of them! I would totally watch this series, even though some of these monsters genuinely scare the shit out of me. Definitely not for kids. Thanks to the site Catsuka for the tip on this. Brief intro from Vimeo: "Here is a trailer I did for a potential horror mini-serie I would like to create. The amazing Jérémy Ben Ammar did the music and sound design." Playground is a proof-of-concept trailer for a horror series - created by Rodrigo Sousa. He is a French Portuguese animator / illustrator / filmmaker who

From Streisand to Spielberg, Jewish artists have made undeniable contributions to the world of American cinema. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, Jewish trailblazers — many of them immigrants to the U.S. — became some of the most prolific vaudeville actors and Hollywood stars. Entertainment was one of the few American industries in which Jewish creatives could establish themselves at a time when antisemitism and xenophobia raged in the United States. Jews were often barred from working in fields deemed more “respectable” — so they flocked to Hollywood. Despite facing discrimination and persecution, these pioneers managed to establish a strong presence in movies, helping to forge the entertainment industry we know today. So why does it feel like diverse Jewish representation in media, in Hollywood and beyond, is hard to find even in 2023? From casting non-Jewish actors in Jewish roles to Ashkenormativity and stereotypical portrayals, unsavory representations of Jewish life have crossed all of our screens — and that’s when we’re included onscreen at all. The following collection gathers contemporary short films that center Jewish voices and issues that spoke to me — and that I hope will speak to you. Some stories are told in English and
