As a result of the continued COVID-19 crisis here in the country, the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will conduct its 2nd online edition this coming August 6 to September 5, 2021, streaming primarily on KTX.ph and on CCP Vimeo.  With this year’s theme being “Navigating Currents”, the biggest independent film festival will mainly focus on 13 short indie films which were chosen from over 200 entries, all competing for the prestigious Balanghai trophies.  Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, there will be no competition for full-length indie films so as to give more time for filmmakers to hone their craft as a result of the pandemic.  Fortunately, for the 13 artists of the short films that made it as finalists in the festival’s main showcase, many were able to persevere and create what they loved despite the limitations they faced due to the lockdown. via Cinemalaya For Jonnie Lyn Dasalla, who directed, wrote, and produced one of the entries called Namnana En Lolang, she made use of her limited resources to create a work that she is proud of. In 1990, the studio created a demo for a PC port of Super Mario Bros. 3. That demo is now in a literal museum. The Strong National Museum of Play, an institution in Rochester, New York, that chronicles the history of play — and also hosts the Video Game Hall of Fame — recently obtained a copy of that port, courtesy of an unnamed individual who sent in a larger trove of software. “The individual who donated it was a game developer,” Andrew Borman, the museum’s digital games curator, told Ars Technica. “It wasn’t something I expected to see in this donation, but it was extremely exciting, having seen the video Romero shared back in 2015.” (In 2015, John Romero posted a video on Vimeo detailing some of the demo’s levels and systems. A Lancaster University PhD Student and video artist has received international recognition for her work this month. Tess Baxter’s doctorate was awarded the Rieger Award by the International Visual Sociology Association, for the innovative way in which it connected how we use the internet with everyday life.Her work combines writing with 40 pieces of video art, and printmaking as well, to explore how people used the online virtual world of ‘Second Life’.Tess said: “I was interested in Second Life because it has now existed for 18 years, which is almost an eternity on the internet, and people have formed communities there. “Creativity is important, and very much shared among users, so I was able to use it creatively for my video art, which, in turn, I shared. “I feel very honoured to have been given this award.
