Beast Beast: Alec Baldwin and Danny Madden on Building a Sympathetic Gun Obsessive

Beast Beast does something you don’t usually see in a Sundance darling: It presents a gun-obsessive who is, at least initially, sympathetic. The film, written and directed by Danny Madden and executive produced by, among others, Alec Baldwin, tells the story of three Georgia teens whose lives intersect tragically. Shirley Chen plays a theater kid, Krista; Jose Angeles plays a skater she likes, Nito; and Will Madden, Danny Madden’s brother, plays Adam, a gun aficionado who dreams of YouTube stardom. Whatever our thoughts on guns, Adam wins us over with his modern underdog qualities: Internet commenters belittle his videos. He stumbles when trying to sound cool in his intros. He has no idea how to be an influencer. His dad urges him to give it up if he can’t monetize. Baldwin initially saw him being played by a Channing Tatum type whose good looks in real life don’t translate to Internet fame. “I was looking at a guy who was like the captain of the football team,” Baldwin told MovieMaker. “Like he like he had everything going for him. But he just had no social skills, like all the cool kids in school are leaving him in the dust in…

Watch: Kwesi Thomas' Short Doc Film 'Battleground' About Racism

by Alex Billington April 22, 2021Source: Vimeo "Loving takes your further than 'not hating', because to love someone is to know what hurts them." Yep. An important short doc film about racism. Battleground is the creation of filmmakers Kwesi Thomas & Mark Bone, developed through conversations immediately following the murder of George Floyd last year (finally there is some justice a year later). Vimeo premiered the 18-minute film and says: "the short captures the particular discomfort of having to argue for one’s value in a society that should care instead of question. Kwesi, a Black man, powerfully conveys these feelings to his co-director Mark, a white man, in the wake of George Floyd's death last May." This was made up in Canada, but still connects with the experiences of any Black person in North America. "The film an attempt to articulate the confusing, vertiginous, experience of one's skin being a site of social conflict, a 'battleground,'" the filmmakers explain. It's beautifully shot and features a number of meaningful conversations with many people about their experiences with racism today. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this short. Description from Vimeo: "Battleground is a short doc conceived by…

Staunton's American Shakespeare Center is asking for help

American Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton. (Source: WVIR) By Tara Todd | April 21, 2021 at 8:37 PM EDT - Updated April 21 at 8:40 PM STAUNTON, Va. (WVIR) - The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) in downtown Staunton is determined to keep the lights on. Their streamed ‘Live at the Blackfriar’s’ concert is this Sunday and it’s the final push to raise the money needed to stay afloat. ASC is still reeling from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Once more, they’re asking their audience for help. “Performing in front of live audiences is everything,” ASC Director of Communications Kelly Burdick said. “The Blackfriar’s Playhouse is built for that.” That’s not happening right now. The only thing you can do inside the Playhouse is take a tour. But the actors are still working. The new season starts in May with Macbeth outdoors. Then in June, they are bringing people inside for Henry V. The playhouse is down from about 300 seats to just 100. “Even a full house doesn’t give us the kind of revenue we’ve seen in the past,” Burdick said. “ASC needs help. Just like last year when the audience stepped up during the Keep the Lights…

Watch: Superb Sci-Fi Short 'Loop' About a Tech CEO Perfecting AI

by Alex Billington April 20, 2021Source: YouTube "What do you feel?" Can we ever perfectly recreate human emotions with a computer? That's the question at the core of this short film titled Loop made by filmmaker London-based filmmaker Stuart Langfield. Loop is a smart sci-fi short set in the middle of the 21st century, that centers around reclusive, retired tech company CEO David Hinton's attempts to teach A.I. how to experience and process true human emotions. "Loop is an artistic exploration of a simple hypothesis: emotion cannot be programmed, it must be felt and experienced to be real." Starring Michael J.Rogers, Valeriia Polishchuk, and Tatenda Hatugari. This is similar in many ways to Alex Garland's Ex Machina, but not really derivative as much as it is an homage, with nods to Blade Runner and every other sci-fi involving Artificial Intelligence. The purity of telling the story this way with a conversation is what makes it so intriguing, like a short based entirely on the famous Voight-Kampff test scene in Blade Runner. I want more filmmakers explore this complex topic even further. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this. Brief description from YouTube: "A retired and reclusive…

Watch: Funky Animated Short Film 'Rules of Play' by Merlin Flügel

by Alex Billington April 19, 2021Source: Vimeo How about some experimental animation to shake up your day and swirl your brain? Rules of Play is a fascinating animated short film from German animation filmmaker Merlin Flügel. It's only 7 minutes and it takes you on a journey into a strange world of people with no faces. The official synopsis: A group of tired playground visitors meet at night for a last contest. The short seems to be riffing on board games and school games, connecting the monotony of it all to our everyday lives and the need to gamify everything. I always enjoy experimental shorts like this because even if I can't understand or figure it out, there's still so much to appreciate in its creativity and uniqueness. And now I want to watch all of the films Merlin has made so far. Thanks to Vimeo Staff Picks for the tip on this short. Very brief description from Vimeo: "A group of tired playground visitors meet at night for a last contest." Rules of Play is directed and animated and written by German animation filmmaker Merlin Flügel - see more of his work on Vimeo or visit his official website…
