50 Tech Leaders Circulated A Private Memo In Washington Calling For Action On SVB

Steven Senne/AP As SVB careened towards catastrophe, some 50 founders, VCs, economists and comms experts gathered in a WhatsApp group to draft a memo calling for urgent preservation of its deposits for the sake of the broader economy. Then they sent it to Washington. Just after 5:30 pm Pacific on Saturday, a memo started making the rounds among policymaker staff. Called “United States Cascade Bank Failure Scenario,” the private document laid out the case for why the U.S. government needed to take “decisive action” to avoid a continued bank run in the wake of the abrupt closure of Silicon Valley Bank. “Today, most Americans assume the SVB failure is contained to the tech economy, but this is not true,” the document said, before laying out a primer on how SVB collapsed and the dire consequences for inaction — insolvency for regional banks, massive job cuts and the loss of banking services for wide swaths of the country, far from Silicon Valley. “The risks to the U.S. economy could be sudden, severe, and extensive,” it warned. Whereas some prominent voices in tech took to Twitter for all-caps concern tweets, the memo was unsigned, but it was authored by a coterie of

DOJ Crackdown Prompts Compliance Scramble on WhatsApp, Signal

Corporate compliance chiefs and general counsel are bombarding outside attorneys with questions about how to design a policy to retain employee messaging on encrypted software, white-collar lawyers say.The intensifying dilemma for companies is fueled by recently stepped up Justice Department pressure in white collar investigations to produce encrypted chats on apps like Signal and WhatsApp. The enforcement push follows a wave of civil settlements on Wall Street over bankers’ inaccessible messages.“To the extent this was a hot topic, it’s going to be even hotter,” said Brian R. Michael, a Los Angeles-based partner in Morrison Foerster’s investigations and white collar defense practice.Clear solutions remain elusive. A DOJ policy announced March 3 directed prosecutors to levy steeper penalties against firms under investigation that are unable to preserve workers’ business-related messages. Companies are struggling to determine if the benefits of obtaining such information, which is often buried in unmonitored devices or gets deleted by disappearing software, are worth the delicate, expensive effort. ‘Brick Walls’Michael, formerly chief compliance officer for 21st Century Fox, said people in his prior role were already getting C-suite resistance about what’s feasible before the DOJ formalized its policy. But in-house lawyers and compliance officers now have a “compelling data

Is WhatsApp making work life more nasty and brutish? – The Irish Times

In idle moments of delusion, I have sometimes wondered if I have what it takes to be a politician. Matt Hancock’s WhatsApp messages prove without doubt I do not.Leaked messages that Hancock wrote as UK health secretary during the pandemic have appeared almost every day this month in London’s Daily Telegraph. They are riveting. I seize on each new batch in the way I imagine Charles Dickens fans rushed to read new instalments of The Pickwick Papers. As a result, I have been reminded of the weapons-grade levels of self-promotion and basic bastardry that pervade the upper reaches of political life.“I must own this,” Hancock told an adviser early in the pandemic, as the pair plotted to ensure he took maximum credit for a vaccine roll-out that other ministers were helping to develop.“It MUST NOT be Alok!” Hancock fretted some time later, having learnt that news was about to break of a vaccine breakthrough that could have left him overshadowed by the then business secretary, Alok Sharma. “I know, I’m worried,” replied his adviser.Hancock also passed on the happy news that the Covid crisis could propel his career “into the next league”. And he discussed the idea of threatening to
