Status takes center stage: New WhatsApp beta brings major interface redesign

ⓘ EyestetixStudio/Pixabay +WABetaInfo WhatsApp may soon give status updates a more prominent position within the app. WhatsApp is testing a major redesign in its latest Android beta. In the future, status updates may appear directly within the “Chats” tab, significantly increasing their visibility. This change could affect the app’s overall clarity and shift its focus further toward a social media experience rather than a purely messaging service. Marius Müller (translated by Marius Müller), Published 02/17/2026 🇩🇪 As reported by WABetaInfo on February 14, 2026, status updates may soon move beyond the separate “Updates” tab and appear directly within the “Chats” section. Currently, users are notified of a new status by a green ring around a contact’s profile picture. To view the update, they can tap the profile picture or switch to the “Updates” tab, where all recent updates are displayed in one place. In WhatsApp beta 2.26.6.9, contacts with a recent status update appear at the top of the “Chats” tab – almost as if they had sent a new message. Their profile pictures remain highlighted. As users scroll through their conversations, a swipeable status bar comes into view. Status updates from muted contacts, however, are not shown in this

(Photo by Miguel MEDINA / AFP) The European Union has escalated antitrust scrutiny against Meta Platforms, warning it may impose interim measures over its decision to restrict rival artificial intelligence (AI) services on WhatsApp. The European Commission stated that Meta’s policy change, effective January 15, limits WhatsApp’s AI capabilities to its own assistant, Meta AI, effectively barring competing AI developers from operating on the platform. The Commission has formally charged Meta with breaching EU competition rules, issuing a “statement of objections” that outlines its preliminary view that the company’s actions could distort competition in digital markets. Meta will have the opportunity to respond before a final ruling is made. “The Commission intends to impose interim measures to prevent serious and irreparable harm to the market,” the statement said, highlighting concerns that waiting for a full investigation could

WhatsApp to bring status update to top app bar: Report WhatsApp is reportedly working to bring the status update to the top app bar, allowing users to access the settings page from either of two entry points. The first point is located in the top app bar, where the profile icon is shown. The second entry point is situated in the bottom navigation bar as a tab, which is known as “You.” With this update, status updates from people you chat with most will be displayed at the top of the screen in the Chats tab, making it quicker to check updates without leaving your chat. As per WABetaInfo, the company is seemingly exploring several ways to offer users quicker accessw to status updates. Alongside the top bar, scrolling down in the Chats tab will be displayed in a row of all contacts’ status updates. This will allow users to scroll horizontally to view them, similar to the old Status tab. Any contacts you have hidden will not appear here. It’s worth mentioning that the feature is currently in the developmental stage and it is likely to release in the near future.

Russia Blocks WhatsApp and Promotes State Messenger Max

People are absorbed in their smartphones as they wait for a Moscow metro train on February 12, 2026. Hector Ramal/AFP/Getty Images Russia officially confirmed the blocking of the WhatsApp messenger on its territory and recommends citizens switch to the state-supported Max app. The decision is tied to a violation of the law by the parent company, but details are not publicly disclosed. Alongside this, there have been reports of restrictions on access to Telegram – another popular service among the population, the military, and government agencies, including the Kremlin and Roskomnadzor. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Thursday that the blocking of WhatsApp was adopted due to violations of the law by the parent company, without specifying concrete details. “Max is a readily available market alternative for citizens; a national messenger is developing. Regarding the blocking of WhatsApp, our authorities have indeed stated that the decision was made and implemented because the corporation was unwilling to comply with the law.” In response, WhatsApp released a statement saying that the Russian government allegedly “tried to completely block WhatsApp” – such a move allegedly would lead to greater subordination to state oversight. “An attempt to isolate more than 100 million users
