The spirit of the foundation remains rooted in the same simplicity it began with: members still share their work through WhatsApp statuses, inspiring more to join. (Photo | Express) Updated on :  14 Sep 2025, 4:20 am HYDERABAD: It started not with a grand plan, but with a single WhatsApp status. Police constable Jabbu Venkatesh, moved by the hunger he saw during the pandemic, typed out a simple offer to help. He knew hunger was more than an empty stomach — it was an enemy that paralysed hope. What he could not have known was that tapping ‘send’ would ignite a chain of compassion, transforming a small gesture into a foundation that has since fed thousands. Venkatesh, who hails from a humble background in Nagarkurnool district and is the first in his family to receive formal education, became a police constable in 2018 through the state government’s recruitment drive. On duty during the Covid-19-induced lockdown, he saw the daily struggles of the poor up close. Speaking to TNIE, he recalls one turning point: “On April 28, 2020, I was on duty near Limra Hotel in Rajendranagar when a mason’s family, who had lost their livelihood, approached me asking where they

We’ve had the requests for the state visit. Charles Is it a hundred cheeseburgers? Starmer Very good, Your Majesty. Camilla Three whole days trying to work out if Melania is having a stroke or if she’s just been at the Valium and Botox cocktails again. Make sure they’ve got my gins lined up, we’ll do the old Buxton switcheroo. Starmer Yes, Your Majesty. I just want to run through the requests we’ve had direct from the president. Charles Get on with it then. One has one’s gardeners to bollock. Starmer Well, he’s delighted about the carriage procession. He just wants to check that his carriage is golden. Charles I thought we agreed we would be in the same carriage. Starmer He wants his own carriage and for it to be the most golden. Camilla Christ. Starmer He also wants to check that his throne

The fight between GovChat vs WhatsApp (Meta) will be discussed in Cape Town during the book launch of 'The Silicon Empire vs Social Impact: The David & Goliath Battle by Eldrid Jordaan on September 15.  In the early months of 2020, when the world stopped moving, South Africa faced a challenge that was as immediate as it was overwhelming: how to get help, quickly and directly, to the people who needed it most. Social grants, the lifeline for millions, were suddenly inaccessible in the usual way. The problem wasn’t money or even policy. The problem was logistics. How do you keep people safe and at the same time put food on their tables? Enter Eldrid Jordaan. Jordaan wasn’t a politician, nor was he a Silicon Valley wunderkind. He was a connector, someone who believed technology could be made humble enough to serve ordinary people. His platform, "GovChat", was an elegant solution to a complex problem: take an interface that almost everyone in South Africa already used, WhatsApp and turn it into a channel for government services. No new app. No steep learning curve. Just a familiar green screen on a phone. For a while, it worked brilliantly. Citizens registered. Government

Ex-WhatsApp security chief Attaullah Baig is suing Meta and alleging the company ignored flaws that put billions at risk. Meta denies the claims, noting the employee’s dismissal for poor performance. Image: Dimitri Karastelev/Unsplash A former WhatsApp executive has filed a lawsuit against Meta, alleging the company ignored serious security flaws that put billions of users at risk. The case, lodged in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, was brought by Attaullah Baig, who served as WhatsApp’s head of security from 2021 until earlier this year. Baig alleges that thousands of Meta and WhatsApp employees could access sensitive user data — including profile pictures, contact lists, and location details — without proper oversight. He also claims the company turned a blind eye to large-scale account hacking, which he says reached more than 100,000 accounts a day. According to the complaint, Baig repeatedly warned senior leaders, including Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, about the risks. Instead of addressing his concerns, the company allegedly retaliated by issuing negative performance reviews and ultimately fired him in February. Baig argues that the company’s actions violated a 2019 privacy settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) that required Meta to strengthen user protections
