The victim, Jayaananda, was added to a WhatsApp group named ‘The Wealth Architects’ on March 20. The group lured him with claims of big profits through stock market investments via a platform called ‘KOPERNIK DMAT’. Believing the claims, Jayaananda transferred a total of Rs 2,30,65,000 to several bank accounts between April 1 and May 13, as instructed by the scammers. However, he received neither returns nor access to the invested funds. A complaint has been registered at the CEN police station, and investigations are underway. Udayavani is now on Telegram. Meerut: To boost transparency and accountability in policing, Meerut police have launched a new initiative called ‘Operation FIR', ensuring that first information reports (FIRs) are registered within 24 hours of receiving a written complaint. The move comes in response to growing concerns about police inaction and complainants being turned away from thanas, officials said. Announced by senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dr Vipin Tada on Wednesday, the initiative will be implemented across the district with immediate effect. "This step is meant to ensure people aren't forced to run from pillar to post," Tada said. Notably, the SSP's office alone receives over 100 complainants every week. Under ‘Operation FIR', investigating officers are required to promptly contact complainants, send FIR copies via WhatsApp and provide regular updates on the investigation, including details of the chargesheet or final report. Sure, this will be appealed and NSO will try to get the awarded damages trimmed down to a more manageable number, but for now, this is what NSO Group owes Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp: NSO Group, the Israeli spyware-maker behind Pegasus, must pay Meta $167.25 million for hacking 1,400 users across WhatsApp. A federal jury in California made the decision on Tuesday after the court found the NSO Group liable for the attacks last year. The Israeli electronic surveillance company NSO Group was ordered to pay $167 million in damages to WhatsApp and its parent company Meta, bringing a close to six years of litigation. WhatsApp filed suit against NSO in 2019 in U.S. federal court, alleging it hacked 1,400 WhatsApp users, including journalists and government officials, using its Pegasus surveillance tool. The ruling on May 6 marks a major win for privacy advocates that have fought against the company’s spyware. It is also the latest setback for NSO, which was sanctioned by the United States in November 2021 after revelations that its products enabled repressive regimes to spy on dissidents, journalists and humanitarian workers. The same month, Apple also filed a lawsuit against NSO seeking to prevent the company from using Apple software. In September, Apple sought to drop the suit, arguing that its disclosures could aid NSO.
