Japan's top court orders Twitter to delete tweets on arrest record – NHK

Japan's Supreme Court has ordered social media giant Twitter to delete tweets showing a man's arrest record. The plaintiff, who was arrested on suspicion of intrusion in 2012 and fined about 750 dollars in a summary order, had asked Twitter to remove the tweets. He argued that the posts, which cited news articles that revealed his name and arrest record, affected his job-search efforts as his information remained accessible. Regarding removal of online details of arrest histories, the top court ruled in a 2017 decision on search engine Google, that such data could be deleted if protection of privacy clearly outweighs the freedom of making the information public. Whether the criteria could be applied to Twitter had been a point of contention. In 2019, a district court ordered Twitter to delete the tweets, arguing that Twitter's operation didn't have a foundation of information distribution like search sites. It also said that as more than seven years had passed since the plaintiff paid the fine, the need to continue disclosing his record had diminished. But a high court said that the platform did have a foundation of information distribution, and ruled that it was not required to remove the posts. The…

Twitter's closed caption toggle is now available on iOS and Android – The Verge

Twitter has announced that a button to toggle captions for its video player is now available for everyone on iOS and Android. The button, which shows up in the top-right corner of the video if it has captions available, lets you choose whether you want to see written descriptions. Twitter started testing this feature in April, but it was only available to a limited number of iPhone users. For years, whether subtitles show up or not on your mobile device has been determined by a variety of factors, like if you’ve turned closed captions on in your phone’s accessibility settings, or if you’re watching the video with your sound off. While those are still taken into account, now you can easily turn them on or off whenever you want, just like you already could on Twitter’s website and many other video platforms. The choice is now yours: the closed caption toggle is now available for everyone on iOS and Android!Tap the “CC” button on videos with available captions to turn the captions off/on. https://t.co/GceKv68wvi— Twitter Support (@TwitterSupport) June 23, 2022 If you want to see an example of the toggle, you can check out The Verge’s tweet with a trailer…

Twitter Users Mock Matt Gaetz's 1st Tweet After His Pardon Request Is Made Public

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) became a victim of “pardon bombing” Thursday on Twitter. It happened after the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol revealed that the lawmaker was one of at least five members of Congress who attempted to get pardons from then-President Donald Trump for their roles in helping Trump attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election. But Gaetz wanted his pardon to be a lot broader than his role in Trump’s election fraud, according to Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. She told the committee that Gaetz had been pushing for a pardon since early December, according to Business Insider.Former White House senior adviser Eric Herschmann told the committee that the “general tone” of the pardon request revolved around the idea that “We may get prosecuted because we were defensive of, you know, the president’s positions on these things.”However, Herschmann noted that the pardon Gaetz was angling for may have been intended to also protect him from the sex trafficking investigation swirling around him.“The pardon that he was discussing, requesting, was as broad as you could describe, from... the beginning of time up until today, for any…

Twitter partners with Shopify to bring merchants' products to Twitter Shopping – TechCrunch

As part of its ongoing efforts to expand into e-commerce, Twitter today announced a new partnership with Shopify. The deal will see Twitter launching a sales channel app that will be made available to all of Shopify’s U.S. merchants through its app store. The app allows merchants to onboard themselves to Twitter’s Shopping Manager, the dashboard offered by the social media company where sellers can access product catalog tools and enable other shopping features for their profiles. The news follows Twitter’s recent launches of shopping-related features, including this month’s introduction of a “Product Drops” feature, and Twitter’s earlier launches of mobile storefronts and livestream shopping. Meanwhile, Shopify says orders placed through partner integrations, like Twitter, quadrupled in the first quarter of 2022. Merchants will be able to use the new sales channel app to connect their Twitter account to their Shopify admin then get set up with Twitter’s Shopping Manager and other free tools Twitter built for “Professionals.” This includes Twitter’s launch of a new feature called Location Spotlight, announced earlier this month, which allows local businesses in the U.S., Canada, U.K., and Australia to display information like their street address, contact info, and operating hours directly on their profile.…

Twitter Board Again Urges Shareholders To OK Elon Musk Takeover, But Tesla Chief Warns …

Twitter’s board of directors reiterated its call for shareholders to approve the proposed $44 billion acquisition of the firm led by Elon Musk, but the billionaire Tesla CEO separately warned of three “unresolved” issues that are holding up the transaction. In an SEC filing, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal and Chairman Bret Taylor both urged shareholders to vote in favor of the deal in an upcoming special meeting. They noted that shareholders would receive $54.20 for each share of Twitter stock they own. After news of the filing started to circulate, the stock rose nearly 3% in early trading to around $38.76. It has lost more than 20% of its value since the merger plan was revealed in April, though most tech shares have seen a similar downturn amid worsening economic conditions. Meanwhile, Musk offered a decidedly gloomy outlook on the economy in an appearance at the Qatar Economic Forum in Doha. He said a recession “is inevitable at some point,” adding that the a near-term recession is “more likely than not.” As to the status of the Twitter takeover, which is backed by more than a dozen other investors, Musk flashed a yellow light and indicated that his previously stated…

Meet Dall-E Mini, the Viral AI Image Tool Fueling Twitter's Nightmares – CNET

On the internet, nightmare fuel just about everywhere you look. The latest source: Dall-E Mini, an AI tool capturing attention on social media thanks to the weird, funny and occasionally disturbing images it creates out of text prompts.Batman surfing. Erin Carson/Dall-E Mini Dall-E Mini lets you type a short phrase describing an image, one that theoretically exists only in the deep recesses of your soul, and within a few seconds, the algorithm will manifest that image onto your screen. Odds are you've seen some Dall-E Mini images popping up in your social media feeds as people think of the wildest prompts they can -- perhaps it's Jon Hamm eating ham, or Yoda robbing a convenience store. This isn't the first time art and artificial intelligence have captured the internet's attention. There's a certain appeal to seeing how an algorithm tackles something as subjective as art. In 2016, for example, actor Thomas Middleditch made a short film based on a script written by an algorithm. Google has produced more than a few tools tying art and AI together. In 2018, its Arts & Culture app let users find their doppelgangers in famous paintings. Or Google's AutoDraw will figure out what you're trying to…
