Deleting old social-media posts is good hygiene, no matter who you are. If you’re applying for college, you don’t want posts from your tween years to keep you from being accepted. If you’re hunting for a new job, you don’t want your online persona to be the reason no one hires you. More than half of employers told CareerBuilder in a 2018 study that they decided not to hire candidates due to content on their social-media profiles. 

Of all the aspects of the recent attempt to cancel my work, the one that seems to fascinate most people is the moment when my publishers sent my Orwell Prize-winning memoirs, Some Kids I Taught and What They Taught Me, to be assessed by experts – sensitivity readers – who would detect and reform its problematic racism and ableism. Of course I cared. I’m horrified that people found prejudice and cruelty in my account of my 35-year teaching career, published in 2019. And I went into the process willingly: I’ve always enjoyed and benefited from editing and saw this as an extension. Last autumn, I did an initial rewrite – there were many things I was eager to change – and sent it off, full of interest and optimism. I received the reports on it before Christmas. They were never formally used and I share the content here – anonymously, of course – because sensitivity reads are being used more and more widely in publishing, and mine gives a valuable insight into how they might work. This brought our attention back to another social media company which has been on our radar for a while, and after last week’s publication, we’ve decided to write our first article on Twitter (TWTR). In case any of our readers need reminding, Twitter is an online news and social networking service where users post and or interact with short messages known as tweets. The company was founded in 2006 in San Francisco. During the last 12 months, we have been following Twitter’s fall from grace, a subsequent drop in share price, driven by a litigation charge which destroyed earnings in their Q3 publication, and eventual departure of charismatic CEO and co-founder Jack Dorsey. Twitter has always struggled compared to some of it’s peers to achieve significant ARPU (average revenue per user), despite the “importance” of the network compared to other social networks, after all Twitter is the network of choice for politicians and celebrities alike with many using the platform to make official announcements – let us also not forget…

Getty Images Twitter’s new CEO Parag Agrawal is getting ready to take “a few weeks” of parental leave when he and his wife have a new baby.  There have been mixed reactions to that announcement. Some are positive, saying his the leave will set a good example for other new fathers. Others are less positive, with people asking ‘Why only a few weeks?’ when Twitter offers 20 weeks of parental leave. And there are those asking why he’s taking parental leave at all. The responses offer insight into the ongoing shift in thinking when it comes to parental leave policies. Before Ryan Cooney told his boss that he and his wife were expecting a baby, he didn’t think he’d have the option to take much time away from work. “I figured I’d get a few weeks off, and that would be it,” Cooney said. Twitter is expanding access to its Safety Mode tool, a new way to limit undesired interactions on the platform. Last September, Safety Mode was first rolled out to a small group of 1,000 English-language users. After months of feedback, Twitter is bringing the feature to more users in English-speaking markets, located across the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. The company said that the rollout will allow it to “gain more feedback and insights.” For those with access to the beta, Safety Mode can be enabled in the settings menu, launching a screening process that automatically filters our potentially harmful or abusive content. In turn, accounts posting tweets deemed harmful won’t be able to follow the user, see their tweets or DM them. Accounts that a user regularly interacts with won’t be subjected to the tool’s algorithm. Once turned on, Safety Mode lasts for seven days by default. Twitter has yet to reveal when it plans to make Safety Mode available to all users. Remember when we began testing a new feature called Safety Mode?
