This Week in Twitter: The Battle for Joe Burrow, Men's Tennis Upsets No. 1 in the … – Eleven Warriors

This Week in Twitter is a look at some of the week's best and most entertaining tweets from Buckeyeland and beyond. The start of February ushered in one of the busiest weeks Ohio State Twitter has had yet through the new year. Monday started off on a nice note when former Buckeye wide receiver and Massillon native Devin Jordan announced he would be returning to Columbus as an offensive assistant. Im honored to have the opportunity to go back to THE University that gave so much to me and serve the student-athletes through the game of football. #GoBucks pic.twitter.com/kgtRjE3VOk — Devin Jordan (@CoachJordan82) January 31, 2022 However, the week largely consisted of excitement surrounding the run up to Super Bowl. Three of the team captains playing in Sunday's professional football championship are former Ohio State players — four if counting a certain Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. — Ohio State Football (@OhioStateFB) February 1, 2022 The Cincinnati Bengals feature two of those three former Buckeyes — Eli Apple and Sam Hubbard — in addition to Joe Burrow. But in case Ohio State fans were not already supporting the Queen City's football team, Hubbard gave everyone a reminder how powerful meme magic is this…

Awkwafina Leaving Twitter After Blaccent Statement – BuzzFeed

"To mock, belittle, or be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My. Nature." Awkwafina addressed criticisms that she uses a "blaccent" and announced that she would be leaving Twitter. Karwai Tang / WireImage / Getty Images Criticisms of cultural appropriation have surrounded Awkwafina, who first gained popularity with her viral rap videos back in 2012, for years now — with some pointing to her earlier roles in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8 as key examples. The backlash further increased after a viral interview of hers resurfaced last year, where she said, "I refuse to do accents. I’m not OK with someone writing the Asian experience for an Asian character." Michael Loccisano / Getty Images for Disney As Vice put it, "As she borrowed from Black culture in order to make a name for herself, the woman born Nora Lum performed a series of racial stereotypes for coolness and clout, and through that posturing, she made her way from viral internet rapper to critically acclaimed actress." Last month, criticisms picked up once again as Awkwafina was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her voiceover work in Raya and the Last Dragon. Axelle…

Twitter downvote button goes global: What it does – SlashGear

Last summer, Twitter started testing both upvote and downvote options on tweet replies. Now, several months later, the downvote button is rolling out on a global scale – while the upvote button is nowhere to be seen. Twitter says this is still a test – or rather a global “experiment” – but the company has also shared what it’s learned about the usefulness of the downvote button in the months it’s been in limited testing among select groups of people. XanderSt/Shutterstock First thing’s first: even though the downvote button is rolling out globally, there isn’t much about the way it functions that’s changing. Downvote counts won’t be made public, so no one will really know just how much a certain Twitter post has been downvoted. Twitter Safety says that a “majority” of users said the reason they downvoted specific replies is because the reply was considered offensive, irrelevant to the topic at hand, or both. Twitter Safety/Twitter Twitter says that the experiment “also revealed that downvoting is the most frequently used way for people to flag content they don’t want to see.” Moreover, that same group of testers seems to agree that downvotes improve the quality of Twitter conversations, which…

(WGHP) — A since-deleted post on Twitter by former Rep. Mark Walker, who is running for U.S. Senate, has sparked heated debate on Twitter. “It’s not for the faint of heart or DC elitists, but there is nothing like late night Waffle House on the campaign trail,” he posted at 10:02 p.m Thursday on his verified @RepMarkWalker Twitter account. The post included a photo of his order: two eggs, hashbrowns and toast. But what seemed to prompt a reaction was not what he ordered so much as it was what he didn’t. Historian and author Kevin Kruse screenshotted Walker’s post and said, “Good God, dry white toast *and* plain hash browns. In most southern states, this is grounds for arrest.” Kruse’s post received more than 4,900 likes and hundreds of retweets. Some came to the defense of Walker’s order, including Georgetown Law Professor Josh Chafetz who wrote, “plain hashbrowns are underrated imo.” Twitter described the debate on its trending page, “Some are pointing out former North Carolina representative and Senate…

Government's Heated Meet With Google, Twitter On Fake News: Report – NDTV.com

The officials did not issue any ultimatum to the companies at the meeting, the sources said.New Delhi: Officials have held heated discussions with Google, Twitter and Facebook for not proactively removing what they described as fake news on their platforms, sources told Reuters, the government's latest altercation with Big Tech. The officials, from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B), strongly criticised the companies and said their inaction on fake news was forcing the government to order content takedowns, which in turn drew international criticism that authorities were suppressing free expression, two sources said. The sources, who were familiar with the proceedings at the virtual meeting on Monday, described the conversation as tense and heated, signalling a new low in ties between American tech giants and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration. The officials did not issue any ultimatum to the companies at the meeting, the sources said. Warriors vs. Rockets: NBA Twitter reacts to Steph Curry's 40 points

After hitting a game-winning jumper the last time the Golden State Warriors met the Houston Rockets, Steph Curry found a different way to leave his impact in Monday’s rematch. Through the first three-quarters of the game, Curry tallied 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor as the Warriors gripped to a nine-point advantage over the Rockets. Yet in the fourth quarter, Golden State’s All-Star point guard wasn’t done. With 12 minutes remaining in the contest, Curry took over. As the Warriors surged to a 122-108 win in Houston, Curry notched 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field with four 3-pointers in the final frame alone. Despite his late fireworks, Curry appeared to receive some trash talk with Houston guard Kevin Porter Jr. after the pair of players exchanged buckets. Words from Porter Jr. in the second half seemed to spark Curry’s run in the fourth quarter. Curry ended the final say, finishing the contest with a game-high 40 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the floor and 7-of-14 shooting from long distance. Curry added nine assists, five boards, a steal and a blocked shot in 38 minutes against the Rockets. After battling a recent slump, Curry’s 40 point effort…

AOC steps away from Twitter over 'negativity,' vows return – New York Post

And just like that… Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) returned to Twitter Tuesday after claiming she was done with the social media giant. The “Squad” member ended her brief Twitter hiatus — which she said she was taking due to “negativity” on the platform — only to target West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a fellow Democrat, over his opposition to President Biden’s “Build Back Better” bill. The tweet came after Ocasio-Cortez announced that she was on a break from Twitter — in response to an Instagram user who pointed out that the congresswoman had not posted anything on either her personal or official page since Thursday. “When will you come back to twitter?? You’re missed,” the user wrote AOC on the lawmaker’s Instagram Story. “That’s so funny you bring that up,” Ocasio-Cortez replied. “Yeah, when I got COVID, I turned off all my devices, which means I wasn’t really on social media that much or anything like that.” She then revealed that when she logged back on, Twitter would make her feel unwell.  “So I mean, literally, I would go to open the app and I almost felt like, anxious,” Ocasio-Cortez explained. “People kind of fight and gossip and all this other stuff so much, but — and there’s a lot of negative, negativity on there…
