Twitter has "withheld" about 35 tweets following a legal request from the Indian government, as per information on the Lumen database. Twitter received a legal request from the Indian government on June 21 for action against 37 tweets, a document on Lumen database showed.  Given that the tweets have been withheld, the content could not be independently verified.  Upon clicking on the blocked URLs listed on the Lumen database, a message saying the tweet has been "withheld in IN in response to a legal demand" is displayed for 35 tweets. Two links displayed the message "This Tweet is unavailable". Lumen database is an independent research project studying cease and desist letters concerning online content, and requests received by Twitter for withholding content are published on its site. When contacted, a Twitter spokesperson said: "As explained in our Country Withheld Policy, it may be necessary to withhold access to certain content in response to a valid legal demand or when the content has been found to violate local law(s)."  The spokesperson noted that the withholdings are limited to the specific jurisdiction/country where the content is determined to be illegal.  The account holder is notified directly -- by sending a message to…

An Indian court on Thursday said Twitter Inc's country head should face no "coercive action" in a case where police summoned him for failing to stop the spread of a video that allegedly incited religious discord, three sources said. Last week, police in northern Uttar Pradesh state sent a written summons to Twitter India head Manish Maheshwari to appear before officials and answer allegations that include inciting "hate and enmity" between Hindu and Muslim communities. Maheshwari, who is based in Bengaluru city in southern Karnataka state, appealed to the court and sought to quash the summons, sources familiar with the matter said. On Thursday, "the judge said no coercive action can be taken against him and he can be examined via video conferencing," one of the sources told Reuters. A second source said the order in effect gives Maheshwari protection from any possible arrest by the police. Twitter declined to comment. The police case had been registered over a video of a few men, apparently Hindu, beating an elderly man believed to be a Muslim and cutting his beard. The government has blocked the popular social media platform since June 5, not long after Twitter enforced its content policies against President Muhammadu Buhari’s account. This extraordinary series of events showcases Nigeria’s dangerous shift toward digital repression, mirroring a global trend in which governments have restricted social media to maintain political control. The move may also be a harbinger of retaliatory restrictions on platforms around the world, as international tech companies begin to enforce their terms of service more stringently against leading politicians and politicians, in turn, seek to exert pressure on platforms. Abuja, Nigeria (CNN)Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has assembled a reconciliation team to lead negotiations with Twitter, more than two weeks after the American social media company's operation was indefinitely suspended in the West African nation.The move came about after Twitter wrote to the President "seeking to engage with the Federal Government over the suspension," according to a statement on Tuesday.
