Poilievre condemned for use of YouTube tag targeting 'misogynistic' groups – CTV News

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are accusing Pierre Poilievre of “using his videos to appeal to far-right misogynistic online movements," after it was revealed that Poilievre's YouTube channel was using a hidden tag to promote his videos among anti-women audiences. "The choice made by the Conservative leader in reaching out to extremist online groups, into pulling in anti-women, misogynistic groups for his own political gain is one that he will have to answer for. I mean, women across this country want to know why he allowed this to happen and want to see him take responsibility for it," Trudeau said in the House of Commons on Thursday. The tag first reported by Global News used to target these online audiences, "#mgtow"—an acronym for “men going their own way”—is a reference to an anti-feminist group of men who seek to separate themselves from women. It has been associated with the so-called "incel" or involuntary celibacy movement.  Reddit has banned the “r/MGTOW” community for violating its rule against promoting hate.  CTV News independently verified the past use of the “mgtow” tag embedded in code of videos on Poilievre’s YouTube page, using the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. As Global News reported,…

Conspiracy theories thrive on YouTube, new study – The University of Sydney

A new study by social media researchers at the University of Sydney and QUT has found conspiracy theories are thriving on YouTube despite the platform's efforts to harden posting rules and guidelines. The study published in the Harvard Kennedy School Misinformation Review, global leaders on misinformation research, examined YouTube comments on Covid-19 news videos featuring American business magnate and philanthropist Bill Gates and found conspiracy theories dominated. The comments covered topics such as Bill Gates’ hidden agenda, his role in vaccine development and distribution, his body language, his connection to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, 5G network harms, and ideas around Gates controlling people through human microchipping and the ‘mark of the beast’. The results suggest that during the Covid-19 pandemic, YouTube’s comments feature, such as anonymous message boards 4chan and 8kun, may have played an underrated role in conspiracy theories growing and circulating. The findings support previous studies that argue misinformation is a collective, socially produced phenomenon. Dr Joanne Gray, digital cultures Dr Joanne Gray, a University of Sydney researcher on digital platform policy and governance, said: “We found that the process of developing a conspiracy theory is quite social. People come together and socially ‘join the dots’ or share…
