Google ordered to pay Australian politician over defamatory YouTube videos – CNN

02:59 - Source: CNN Google's Street View is 15 years old. See the new camera it's rolling out Reuters  —  An Australian court on Monday ordered Google to pay a former lawmaker A$715,000 ($515,000), saying its refusal to remove a YouTuber’s “relentless, racist, vilificatory, abusive and defamatory” videos drove him out of politics. The Federal Court found the Alphabet Inc (GOOGL) company intentionally made money by hosting two videos on its YouTube website attacking the then-deputy premier of New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, that have been viewed nearly 800,000 times since being posted in 2020. The ruling revives the question of how much culpability technology firms have for defamation conveyed by users on their websites in Australia, one of few Western nations where online platforms have the same legal responsibility as publishers. Australia is reviewing what legal exposure platforms should have for defamatory posts. A landmark case in 2021, where a newspaper was found liable for defamatory reader comments below an article posted on Facebook, drove global firms to reduce their social media presence in the country. The judgment showed Google had denied the videos carried defamatory imputations, and said the YouTuber had the right to an honestly…

Bangladesh's king of YouTube is not who you think it is – The Business Standard

On a hot noon of May, a bald man was sitting on a hog plum tree with a jackfruit in his hand in Ishwardebtwa, a remote village of Naogaon. Next to him was a woman looking after a temporary shop set up in a van, selling nearly a dozen jars of water mixed with abeer – the bright coloured powders used during Holi celebrations. The woman began calling for customers in a dramatic voice and with exaggerated gestures. Before we could understand what was happening, suddenly, the bald man, wearing a smirk on his face, stood up and hurled the jackfruit at the woman. The fruit hit the van, shattered the jars, flooding the streets with a dramatic mix of colourful water pouring from the broken jars. The woman started screaming on the street, flailing her hands and legs around. People soon gathered around the duo and began cheering the "performance". Both the man and the woman were actually paid actors, shooting a Youtube video that showed people getting into all sorts of mischief with a jackfruit. The entire video would soon be compiled with some added comical sounds and music, and uploaded on Youtube to make people laugh. The…

YouTube could be liable for unauthorised uploads if slow to act, German court rules | WTVB

BERLIN (Reuters) – Google’s YouTube and other platforms could have to pay copyright damages over unauthorised uploads even if the content was put online by a third party, Germany’s top court ruled. The platforms would be liable only if they did not act quickly to block access once they had learned of illegal uploads, the court said in its ruling on Thursday. The case comes amid a long-running battle between Europe’s $1 trillion creative industry and online platforms, with the former seeking redress for unauthorised uploads. It is also part of the wider debate on how much online platforms and social media should do to police the posting of unauthorised, illegal or hateful content.Operators of upload platforms could in principle also be obliged to disclose the identify of users who commit the infringements and their email addresses, according to the ruling. The court based its ruling on one issued by the EU Court of Justice last year.Thursday’s decision involves a lawsuit filed by a music producer after video and audio recordings of an artist he owned the rights to were still available on YouTube even after the producer’s lawyer had sent a letter asking them to be removed. No final decision was taken by the…
