'Unemployment got us workin' a lot': Brooklyn gang charged with stealing $4.3 million in …

A Brooklyn street gang has been charged with pocketing more than $4.3 million in pandemic relief benefits, using stolen identities to file 1,000 fraudulent unemployment claims, prosecutors said. Eleven members of the Woo gang were accused of filing more than $20 million in false benefit applications, about a fifth of which were approved, and having the payments sent to addresses they controlled. Prosecutors said the gang was ultimately caught, in part, because members posted numerous pictures and videos of themselves online, flashing gang signs and piles of cash, often while standing in front of luxury cars, including Lamborghini and Mercedes Benz vehicles. “Photographs and videos of the defendants posted on publicly accessible social-media pages show them (a.) expressing their allegiance to the Woo street gang through hand signs and other means, and (b.) flaunting their ill-gotten gains by displaying large stacks of United States currency and standing near luxury vehicles,” investigators wrote in the criminal complaint. In May 2021, several of the accused gang members appeared in a music video on YouTube, entitled “Trappin,” which included lyrics such as: “Unemployment got us workin’ a lot,”  which investigators argued in court papers was a reference to the fraud scheme. Ten of…

Investigating Canadian YouTube rival Rumble and its growing popularity among the world's far right

As he wandered the red zone of the protest site in Ottawa, David Freiheit appeared bashful about the reception he received, but also energized by it. People wanted pictures with him, embraced him with whispers of support in his ear, and treated him like a celebrity. He was livestreaming for hours at a time, his quick legal mind providing commentary in between interviews with the people drawn to the protest, and to him. But Rumble had the hometown advantage during the trucker protests, even though many of the tens of millions who check out the video hosting platform every month may not know it’s Canadian. “I have difficulty keeping it to myself now because things have fallen off a cliff in terms of rational discourse and rational behaviour from the political elite,” he told W5. His fans knew him from his video channel hosted on rumble.com, as well as substantial followers on YouTube and Facebook. CEO Chris Pavlovski tells the foundation story of Rumble in just about every interview he grants, primarily to American conservative media. It goes something like this. In 2013, upset that YouTube was making it harder for everyday content creators to earn a living, Pavlovski created…

YouTube Censors Mom Fighting School Mask Mandates – The Daily Signal

Once again, Big Tech is deciding which voices can speak out and which ones can’t. The latest victim is a mom of four from Virginia whose interview with The Daily Signal was removed by YouTube Thursday. Merianne Jensen went viral earlier this month when she made a passionate speech about COVID-19 mask mandates affecting kids at school. Jensen was addressing the school board of Prince William County, a Virginia community in the Washington, D.C., suburbs. “You are on the losing side of history and it’s time to make that right before these children now,” she told the school board. So far, a video of her speech tweeted by The Daily Signal has garnered 1.6 million views.  SHE HAD THE RECEIPTS: Last year the Prince William County School Superintendent claimed “her hands were tied” by then-governor Northam's mask mandate for students…WATCH Virginia mom Merianne Jensen call out the hypocrisy pic.twitter.com/BzkyumkRbo— The Daily Signal (@DailySignal) February 3, 2022 Shortly after Jensen spoke to the Prince William County School Board, my colleagues Lauren Evans, Mark Guiney, and Philip Reynolds interviewed her. They thought our audience would want to learn more about what inspired this mom, and why she was opposed to mask mandates in schools.  In other words, they were acting like true journalists.  But YouTube has an…
