Court filing: Google settles YouTube child privacy case for $30 million – TheDesk.net

(Stock image, Graphic by The Desk) Key Points: Google has agreed to pay $30 million to settle claims it illegally collected children’s data on YouTube for targeted ads. The class action could cover up to 45 million U.S. children under 13 who used YouTube between 2013 and 2020. Claimants may receive $30 to $60 each, while lawyers plan to seek up to $9 million in fees from the settlement. Google has agreed to pay $30 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it violated the privacy of children using YouTube by collecting personal information without parental consent and using that data to deliver targeted advertising, according to court documents reviewed by The Desk this week. A preliminary settlement was filed Monday in federal court in California, and is awaiting approval from U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan van Keulen. The settlement absolves Google of having to admit any wrongdoing in the case. Google is part of technology company Alphabet, and counts YouTube as one of its many subsidiary businesses. The lawsuit was brought by the parents of 34 children, who accused Google of violating dozens of state privacy laws, including regulations in California. The plaintiffs claimed YouTube’s algorithm targeted children by serving up recommendations

This adjustable Allen key tool is one small project for a YouTube channel, one giant leap for …

Inventing the Adjustable Allen Key | Toolroom Takeover 2025 - YouTube Watch On Ever wondered why there isn't an Allen key (or hex key, if you prefer) equivalent to the adjustable wrench or spanner? Turns out it's actually quite a complex engineering challenge. But this is 2025, so, the solution hasn't come from a top university engineering lab or a big corporate, but a YouTube competition. According to YouTube channel Chronova Engineering, the adjustable wrench or spanner was patented back in the 1890s. You might have thought an adjustable tool for Allen bolts, the ones with hexagon inserts in their heads, wouldn't be far behind. The Allen bolt itself wasn't invented until a decade or so after the adjustable wrench. But as Chronova Engineering says, there's surely been enough time since to come up with a solution. But apparently not. So, the channel had a go at what's thought to be the world's first adjustable Allen key. Chronova Engineering ran through numerous iterations to come up with a workable solution. The first design had six splines or prongs, one for each of the corners of the Allen bolt insert. That suffered from terminal torsional flex. So, a three-spline alternative was

I Didn’t Think I’d Like YouTube Without Dislikes—But I Was Wrong – MakeUseOf

Maybe it’s just me, but it recently occurred to me that, unlike a few years ago, I’m now free to enjoy YouTube content without wondering if I’m supposed to. It’s a small change, but it’s shifted how I interact with the platform in ways I didn’t anticipate. The Subtle Psychology of Dislikes When YouTube announced that it was getting rid of public dislike counts in late 2021, the internet reacted the way it always does by splitting into camps and arguing about it. Some framed it as a way to protect creators from harassment. Others were convinced it was just shielding brands and big corporations from public humiliation. And then there were the folks who liked having that number front and center, because, well, how else do you know if a video’s worth your time? Personally, I never saw the dislike count as just a statistic; rather, it felt more like a preface to the story I was about to watch. When I’d click on a video and see a towering stack of dislikes right beside the likes, my brain would instantly start filling in the blanks: This is probably bad, or Everyone hates this, so you will too. It

YouTube Is Choking Out Car Videos – Yahoo! Autos

YouTube is reportedly choking out car videos on its platform, or at least select ones the powers that be don’t exactly like. This includes videos depicting automotive racing or crashed, damaged rides in any context. It’s a truly wild time to be alive. Shockingly, NASCAR won’t ban roof climbs in race celebrations. We’ve heard claims like this made before, but they usually come from some Reddit post or some other interesting source. This time it’s popular car YouTuber TK’s Garage leading the charge. He claims if any videos are posted that depict racing of any type, as well as drifting, they could be demonetized. Even worse, the videos might be taken down and counted as a violation of community standards, with the person posting them edging closer to a platform ban. What’s crazy TK’s Garage claims this applies even if the racing or drifting takes place on a closed track or private land. That’s right, you might not have broken any laws or statutes in the making of the video, but YouTube will still punish you. In fact, he claims Dodge’s video from Roadkill Nights has already been demonetized. Even wilder is the claim YouTube will do the same for

New Heights’ YouTube glitch raises concerns about Chiefs-Chargers in Week 1

Whenever the NFL migrates to a new streaming platform, concerns emerge as to whether it will work. As it relates to the upcoming Week 1 game to be streamed for free on YouTube, a concern has emerged as to whether it will work. As noted by Chris Bumbaca of USA Today, a glitch in the live stream of megastar Taylor Swift’s visit to the New Heights podcast with Travis and Jason Kelce has raised the question of whether Chiefs-Chargers, which happens three weeks from tonight, will support 20 million or more concurrent streams. The New Heights stream abruptly ended with 15 minutes left in show. While it was resolved, it’s fair to ask whether there will be any outages during Chiefs-Chargers. A Google spokesperson told Bumbaca that the New Heights glitch was not a YouTube issue. While there’s nothing wrong with being concerned, it would be a surprise if the game doesn’t stream without issue. Netflix’s Jake Paul-Mike Tyson fight has significant issues. Six weeks later, a pair of Christmas games on Netflix worked without incident. YouTube knows what it needs. And the league wouldn’t have been inclined to make a bet with YouTube if the NFL wasn’t sure YouTube
