Spartans Clinch Spot in Mountain West Championship With Win Over Nevada

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Kyle Calzadiaz allowed one earned run across eight innings pitched and Jake McCoy went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a home run to lead the San José State baseball team (26-28, 13-17 MW) in a 10-2 victory over Nevada (33-21, 19-11 MW) at Excite Ballpark on Saturday afternoon in the final game of a three game series. With the win, the Spartans clinched a spot in the Mountain West Baseball Championship. Calzadiaz (2–2) earned the win with a masterful performance on the mound, going eight strong innings while allowing just two runs (one earned) on seven hits and striking out seven without a walk. Offensively, the Spartans erupted for 13 hits, including a decisive six-run fifth inning that broke the game open.  The Spartans took an early lead on Zach Tallerman’s two-run homer in the second. However, Nevada tied things up with two runs of their own in the third. McCoy put the Spartans back in front with a home run to leadoff the fourth.
