Three sleeping occupants of the home around 122 Street and 131A Avenue were jolted awake by the smoke alarm around 4 a.m. to discover a fire in the basement and evacuated, said Edmonton Fire Rescue Services spokesperson Brittany Lewchuk. “This event shows the importance of having working smoke alarms on all levels of the home as they provide the earliest detection and warning,” Lewchuk said in a news release. Firefighters could see smoke coming from the single-family home when they arrived at 4:09 a.m., within six minutes of being called.
