Vimeo is shutting down its TV apps, suggesting customers watch via video-casting features for a “better ongoing experience.” Those who watch Vimeo through an Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV as well as the Fire TV Stick will no longer be able to do so starting June 27th, 2023. Per Vimeo: “Back in 2016, we launched our Apple TV, Android TV, and Roku apps to bring the best of Vimeo to your big screen. Today, Vimeo is much more than a viewing destination. It’s an all-in-one video experience platform giving creative professionals, businesses, and organizations everything they need to make and market amazing, impactful videos.” As of June 27th, Vimeo will no longer provide new releases, updated security measures, or technical support for the abovementioned televisions. This is in part due to a 4 percent decline in revenue, which prompted Vimeo to lay off 11 percent of its staff. In an announcement posted on Vimeo’s website, the company states: “We strive to provide our users with a best-in-class playback and live streaming experience that’s optimized across devices, geographies, bandwidth, and network performance. Occasionally, we retire legacy products and features that are no longer consistent with our standards.
