Vimeo is opening free hosting for public videos, along with a larger allowance for other uploads and more creative tools. For filmmakers, the opportunity comes with an important distinction between releasing a film on Vimeo and embedding it elsewhere. For an independent filmmaker, finishing a film is only part of the work. Getting it in front of an audience, keeping earlier projects accessible, and maintaining a portfolio all require decisions about where that work lives. Vimeo’s latest announcement could make one of those decisions easier. In a blog post published on 7 October 2026 and updated on 8 October, the company introduced unlimited public video sharing as part of its revamped Free plan. It is presenting the change as a renewed commitment to filmmakers, with ad-free viewing central to the offer. The first thing filmmakers need to understand is the relationship between visibility and embedding. What “unlimited” actually covers Vimeo’s unlimited public storage applies when a video meets both conditions: its privacy is set to Public, and embedding is switched off.
