The girlfriend, who is not identified and not charged, was at the scene of the bonfire when it was lit on or about the night of April 21, according to an affidavit of probable cause obtained by NJ Advance Media. In the document, she is identified as the girlfriend of the 17-year-old suspect, who was charged last week. The classmate she messaged voluntarily went to police headquarters with her mother and spoke to detectives a few days after the fire, describing the message sent to her from her friend, according to the document. Sent on the day that the wildfire was starting to spread, April 22, it read “we started the fire,” according to the affidavit.
