JAKARTA, Aktualita.co – The way Generation Z communicates online is shifting. While WhatsApp and Telegram remain widely used, young people’s conversations are increasingly spreading across Instagram Direct Messages, TikTok Messages, Snapchat, Discord, and new applications that offer more visual chatting experiences. This change is blurring the lines between social media and messaging apps. For many young users, conversations no longer necessarily start by opening a chat app and typing a message. Instead, chats often originate from TikTok videos, Instagram Reels, friends’ posts, memes, or interesting content that is then shared via direct message (DM). However, the assumption that Indonesian Gen Z is abandoning WhatsApp en masse is not supported by data. The Jakpat Gen Z Characteristics and Behaviors Outlook 2026 survey of 1,158 Gen Z respondents shows that WhatsApp remains the most widely used messaging application. A total of 89 percent of respondents reported using WhatsApp in the last six months, while 41 percent used Telegram and 9 percent used LINE.
