By Mansoor TanweerThu., Dec. 30, 2021timer1 min. readupdateArticle was updated 1 hr agoCybertip.ca is reporting an “alarming trend” of teens reporting that their Snapchat accounts are getting hacked.Since August of 2021, Cybertip.ca and the Canadian Centre for Child Protection both received a combined 27 reports of exploitation attempts related to Snapchat.The offender will often use tactics like stalking the teen until they comply with exploiters demands, using threats of sharing intimate photos to extort money, or they may even provide a link to the teen to help “recover” their email and password and then take over their account.“Sextortion is a crime with no boundaries,” said Ryan Anderson of the Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS)“Often sextortion starts with seemingly normal online conversations. The chats are then moved to more private platforms where they turn personal and sexual.” Anderson goes onto say that “attention bombing,” or manipulation through providing emotional warmth, can be used to make the victim feel special.“They may demand more videos or to transfer them money.
